What leads candidates to diverge from stated party messaging strategies during election campaigns? I examine the drivers of candidates' toxic campaign discourses during the 2022 🇫🇷legislative elections with Laurence Rowley-Abel, Elise Frelin, and Max-Valentin Robert. doi.org/10.1080/014023…

ABSTRACT Most studies of political rhetoric examine only political leadership or treat parties as unified actors. However, what happens where electoral systems incen-tivise candidates to diverge from stated party messaging during campaigns?Figure 4 from the paper shows the increased incidence of toxic rhetoric from French far-right candidates, relative to mainstream ones.For some politicians, holding national office previously does decrease the level of toxic speech.The French far right is especially toxic when discussing its mainstay areas of law and order and attacking rival leaders.
