i want to build a platform that's aggressively anti-genAI but i don't know if that's technically or financially feasible. but i'm just so tired of all this across all our apps. like, just give me a non-AI space 😭

Twitch and Amazon are apparently planning to use streams to train Generative AI. Multiple sources tell me it will be announced in the coming months, despite some internal friction against it. Creators may be able to opt out of some training data.

in case y'all need a time check, the mcu has existed for the entirety of the lives of the incoming first year college students (born in 2008)

Agreed that this is a good segment. There is not a single component of the AI stack that is not antagonistic to human welfare. An interviewee in this segment compares this to noise torture, and anyone exposed to constant noise of this sort knows it’s hostile to one’s wellbeing.

This is a well-produced segment. I encourage you to watch so you can hear the noise for yourself. The professor of environmental health science that they interviewed called it an “unprecedented new noise source.”

My brilliant colleague Iván Chaar López 's tenure denial is not only a threat to UT faculty, but to all scholars who research topics considered "controversial." His case is a model for how to deny tenure with zero justifications to him or his colleagues. www.statesman.com/news/educati...

UT border surveillance scholar was a shoo-in for tenure. UT denied him.

American Studies scholar Iván Chaar López fears UT’s unexplained tenure denial violated his academic freedom amid scrutiny of controversial fields.

ok but has anyone written about how plato's allegory of the cave could be totally recontextualized to apply to today's streaming reality

you could write a really interesting book about how the gut has been overlooked as a central part of one's identity. from plato's tripartite soul to the complex workings of the gut biome to colloquialisms like "gut feeling", you could trace why identity is more than the mental but is deeply embodied

something happened today in my research area that's absolutely incredible but has absolutely no bearing on my research at all and no one will ever really know (or care) about it except me, and i think that's a shame

idk i think there's something ironic about participating in a space that wants to make LLMs and generative AI better, but also not wanting LLMs and generative AI to affect your own work

can't help but think that the dismantling of twitter has hurt social movements in at least some way cause we definitely should be hearing and connecting more about the nationwide data center protests today

wanting to write something about physical media and materiality and memory and data centers and the cloud and subscriptions and ownership and--
