this ruling seems to lay the groundwork for a trans bathroom ban, both in schools and in state-run public spaces. if title IX & the equal protection clause do not apply to trans people, there is seemingly little preventing the court from a ruling similar to what we saw in the UK earlier this year

The time to transcribe, which is also time to read and think about material, has been taken from us by those with the power to fund our work. Now they want it without funding it.

maybe one upside of the creeping death of google scholar? it could help get rid of the myth that (A) much-cited work is better research and (B) papers that cite more texts are better. shoddy work can rack up big metrics! poor arguments can have long bibliographies! you gotta read it to find out

i feel like this kind of scholarly malpractice only becomes possible because of the twin developments of (1) publish-or-perish neoliberal academic economies and (2) the advent of tools like google scholar making masses of publications immediately accessible. if you compare bibliographies...

Academics and technologists are sounding the alarm about a growing crisis in scholarship as we know it: AI-generated citations of nonexistent papers that have infested real journals. Despite being fake, the sources are widely assumed to be authentic the more they appear in published literature.
