Really enjoyed @beetroot.bsky.social's talk on how conspiracy theories have shaped American society. A great part of @histassoc.bsky.social 's course on American Culture. Put me in mind of @jonnelledge.bsky.social's great book on the subject (which you should all read!)
Amazingly one picture exists of the mortarboard staying on my head - an appropriate end to the year!
Really enjoyed @jmcoghlan.bsky.social's talk on American literature spreading abroad and how it became popular in the UK, as part of @histassoc.bsky.social's short course on American Culture. Fascinating to learn that Washington Irving had a Birmingham period and Walt Whitman had fans in Bolton!
Wrapping up the year by being warmly welcomed at my first ever #SHP26. Ready to reflect over summer before eagerly getting back into the classroom to try out some new ideas. History teachers really are the best!
Really enjoyed all three days of #SHP26. An incredible range of fascinating, engaging and incredibly creative sessions on teaching History. Especially enjoyed @arthurjchapman.bsky.social and Daniel Magnoff’s brilliant session on developing historical understanding using analogies.
Absolutely loads to unpack after #SHP26 great to continue to meet so many impressive history educators. What a great community 💪🏼 time to tackle the summer TBR list...
Really enjoyed @sianround.bsky.social’s talk tonight on Black writers and their experiences in the Jim Crow South at the time of the Harlem Renaissance, the first in @histassoc.bsky.social’s short course on American Culture, can’t wait for the next one or to read Sian’s book!
My daughter said to me on Thursday “this is the hottest day of my life” and honestly the Homer/Bart “so far” meme has never been so bitter

A livestream of a volcano in the Philippines captured a meteor crashing to Earth today. What are the odds? Mayon Volcano, Location: Albay, Luzon, Philippines
History documentary on Sky about the Vikings using Gen-AI footage for historical reenactment. Besides my objections on aesthetic grounds and on principle grounds, the algorithm is blatantly just using the TV show Vikings as its primary reference point
From Australia: "New research has found public transport fares have not been a decisive factor in pushing people to shift from car to public transport." "Better public transport access, coverage, reliability, and travel time have a greater impact than price in changing long-term commuting habits."
'Hard to break the habit': Why free public transport isn't enough to shift from cars
Free public transport is a popular policy, but researchers say it's not enough to convince drivers to leave the car at home.

i would suggest an online safety act that can’t deal with CSAM on a widely used social network frequented by most westminster public figures isn’t doing a very good job of keeping anybody safe online
1 DAY to go until Lion & Unicorn's 🎉10th anniversary🎉, and still no word on our appeal for release from Grok Gaol. For 10 years we've been a place for writers to post mostly unsaleable pieces they just fancied writing. Occasionally we found a readership. Help us get to 20 by sharing & following.
At the other place, the Lion & Unicorn account has been suspended. 6 days on, we've had no response to our appeal, and we're no wiser as to how we broke the X rules. It's our 10th anniversary on Saturday. If you've enjoyed our writing, please spread the word here. thelionandunicorn.wordpress.com
hey did you know that Bismarck was the one who nicked Alsace Lorraine from France back in the 19th century that's why historians call him............Grand Theft Otto
For those of us who enjoy snooping around in the archives and are #devolution anoraks, this is an interesting read that says much about the increasing electoral & political challenges facing Trimble and the UUP at that time #stormont
An adviser to David Trimble suggested that a border poll could be held at the same time as the 2001 General Election because he thought it would help get UUP voters out to polling stations. Trimble ultimately adopted the idea, but the Government said no.
"Africa is new, revolutionary but this administration has not known that Africa has existed" so said then Senator John F Kennedy in October 1960 and not much has changed since then as Ian Linden's excellent article makes clear: www.thearticle.com/africa-as-th... The failure of western governments
