It has been great exploring Lukang with the writer Niu Er the Pig Butcher (殺豬的牛二 ... how's that for a pen name?). And this gem of temple art, as Spongebob takes his first tentative steps into the Taiwanese pantheon, is a thing of joy.

Was thrilled to receive ‘On the Bodies of Strangers’ (which I ordered just yesterday) first thing this morning. Particularly as someone who is extensively inked, with each tattoo linked to a specific time, memory & experience, couldn’t wait to get this book. Perfect timing with approaching typhoon.

In Pingtung city, our neighbours come over with big shopping bags full of gin. They share it with us. And then, as they stagger to the door, they insist on leaving it on our drinks cabinet for next time. The added benefit of this is that it also "keeps it out of the way of the kids." I approve.

Our local pharmacist here in Pingtung has a sidekick called Haru. Haru is a dog who wears a blue cravat, and who stands with a sorrowful look on his face while the patient lists their symptoms. Then, while the pharmacist goes to cook up potions, Haru sidles over to sniff the patient reassuringly.

Until every SPAR, Premier, Nisa, Costcutter, Londis and Budgens in the UK installs a Taiwanese-style ibon machine, I will continue to maintain that we British folks are benighted savages, our so-called culture nothing but a facade.
