I think my most boomer-coded opinion is that high definition is too high definition these days

all the important battles for the future of the humanities were fought after the financial crisis, during the neoliberal restructuring of the university. faculty were too disorganized to stop it. popularization of our fields make no difference if people approach college as expensive job training.

We do not have to do this to save the humanities, and it would not save the humanities if we did. The humanities are not imperiled because the content we teach is unpopular.

This is something I wish I'd clarified more in the original thread - less that there's some anti-Odyssey consensus, more that if the field wants to benefit from the Odyssey it is going to have to positively engage with it and go to bat for at least the idea of popular retellings of the classics.
