In contrast to earlier hypotheses that pollinators can help new polyploids establish, we suggest that pollinators mainly prevent polyploid establishment because outcrossing increases the strength of minority cytotype exclusion.

In certain genera, there appears to be a positive correlation between polyploidy and dioecy, but why this correlation occurs have long been a mystery. A case in point is Rubus chamaemorus (in the picture), a circumpolar species comprising male and female individuals, predominantly surrounded by hermaphroditic relatives within the genus. However, the authors show that polyploidy is rare in genera which mainly consists of dioecious species, indicating that polyploidy is favoring dioecy, while dioecy is disfavoring dioecy.

🚨Yet again we use the incredible #ITEX experiment to increase knowledge about warming effects on tundra ecosystems. Despite a moderate 1.4 °C increase in air temperature, we see a persistent increase ecosystem respiration (CO2) by 30%. Read the full story here: disq.us/t/4o1y0d1
