They then used his travel across state lines as tracked by Flock as part of the probable cause justification to search his car.
I agree. The way I often put it is that, done right, study and education *liberalizes*, not in a pre-determined, ideological sense, but in the sense of complicating (with the force of facts, truth & seeing from multiple perspectives) the facile binaries and narratives that serve the powerful.

i started this train of thought as a joke but now i do think there's something to the idea that the way to sell the green revolution to the US public is that we're being denied Good Deals on cheap chinese cars and solar panels and there's nothing more unamerican than saying we can't have a good deal

Mark Harris@markharris.bsky.social · 2d agoThis is exactly right. Spider-Man exists outside the Marvel phenomenon (whatever remains of it) the same way that, to a lesser (in terms of box office) extent, Batman exists outside of the DC phenomenon (whatever remains of it).
I am making it a habit to always look for the labor story behind these nasty scandals. The consumers are almost never the only ones being harmed.

Hot take: everyone wants to talk about Scylla (scientists are bad at simple, clear communication) and no one wants to talk about Charybdis (scientists, especially in climate or public health, live in constant fear of bad faith attacks on approximate statements by a right wing career-ending machine)
I think we all need to figure out a way forward when the discourse is dominated by partisans paid to find new angles of information every day. I do it too, but we are all punching shadows when we pretend that these are worthwhile debates and not the products of a coordinated flood of nonsense.
