The whole service was beautiful, but this—and Lisa O’Neill singing “Old Note”—especially wrecked me. m.youtube.com/watch?v=HLlS...

Been spinning this one a lot the last couple days. The Swell Season album that came out last year is so damn good—I’d kind of slept on it a little. m.youtube.com/watch?v=SB64...

Incredible mail day thanks to my pal Robert who sent me some Knicks clippings from my hometown papers and magazines, as well as this gorgeous edition of one of my favorite novels.
Everyone’s revisiting ONCE (as I did last night, crying my eyes out), but you should also be sure to (re)watch THE SWELL SEASON doc. It’s a beautiful portrait of a fragile creative & romantic partnership. A highlight is GH singing my favorite song ever, “Raglan Road.” m.youtube.com/watch?v=fnkJ...
Dennis Hopper's sun-soaked pulp noir gets the UHD + HDR treatment. Don Johnson, Virginia Madsen and Jennifer Connelly are enmeshed in a dusty small town love-triangle, whose only escape is murder. THE HOT SPOT (UHD + BD LE) is out in UK and US/CA this August.

Can’t believe Glen Hansard is gone. What an unbelievable tragedy. I loved his and Lisa O’Neill’s rendition of Fairytale of New York at Shane MacGowan’s funeral: m.youtube.com/watch?v=ptay...

RIP Glen Hansard. Such awful news. I loved his music and especially loved how he was always spreading the word on Jason Molina. m.youtube.com/watch?v=cavb...

Another incredible mail day. Been waiting for this on Blu-ray a long time. Killer release by Arrow. It includes artwork by Tony Stella (RIP), a commentary track by my pal Jed Ayres, an appreciation of the film by Walter Chaw, and new writing on the film by Priscilla Page, Glenn Kenny, and Chris D.
I haven’t seen THE ODYSSEY yet, but both Matt Damon and Christopher Nolan picked Carl Franklin’s ONE FALSE MOVE (which features a liner note essay by me!) in the Criterion Closet, which is pretty damn swell. m.youtube.com/shorts/ing6l...

Finally got my long-delayed LAST SUMMER Blu-ray. So damn glad this is available now.
Just got my copy of Drew Buxton’s killer debut novel, DAYTONA TEDDY RIGGS, which is out 8/25 from Hub City Press. Highly recommend you preorder it now. There are excerpts from my blurb on the front and back—see the third slide for the full blurb. Excited for folks to read this one.
One of my favorite photographers. hyperallergic.com/helen-levitt...
Helen Levitt Captured the Poetry of New York City
A new survey publication serves as a testament to the photographer’s belief that the city’s working-class communities of color possessed a beauty and drama all their own.

The legend Barry Gifford blurbed my new novel, HEAVY SUGAR. The blurb came in as a typewritten fax, like a transmission from the past. Had to share it as is because it’s beautiful—both the words and just how it looks. Preorder HEAVY SUGAR now: www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/828881...
Got my copies of the French edition of SAINT OF THE NARROWS STREET (aka UNE AFFAIRE DE FAMILLE), available now from Éditions Gallmeister. Translated by Simon Baril and Juliane Nivelt. Beautiful cover art by Aurélie Bert.
This album is so damn great. Takes weird chances. Raw and strange and lovely. Hard to find something to compare it to—maybe The Fall meets Frightened Rabbit with a little bit of Daniel Johnston mixed in there. menzies.bandcamp.com/album/holdin...

My friend, Brooklyn Bard & fellow Calabrian countryman @wmboyle4.bsky.social is 1 of literary character driven crime fiction’s best kept secrets. His work reads like a collaboration of John Fante & Sidney Lumet. Neighborhood pasta dinners with secret sauce & a side of mischief. Out January 2027.
Got poisoned against Dreiser long ago. Wasn’t expecting in my 40s that he’d became one of my favorite writers. JENNIE GERHARDT is a masterpiece. Just right up my alley in every way. Tragic and beautiful. (The 1933 film adaptation with Sylvia Sidney is also very good.)
Great mail day! Recieved an ARC of @wmboyle4.bsky.social 's forthcoming novel, HEAVY SUGAR from soho press. I believe it comes out in February of 2027. Bill is a good friend, glad to have his latest. I'm looking forward to digging in right after I finish a Tom McGuane novel.

‘We were kids dressed as gangsters, running riot’ – Alan Parker’s Bugsy Malone at 50, by its cast and crew
Jodie Foster hated her 6am starts, Parker couldn’t stop swearing, Dexter Fletcher was traumatised by his haircut … There was as much drama off-screen as on during the making of this classic movie
