Soft left(ie), former Labour staffer, now 🟢 member, and a tech/climate nerd who follows US politics a lot for a Brit. He/him + 🏳️‍🌈.

For all of the talk about how Trump changed the GOP, I think there's also very much the angle of how the overall Right Wing Cinematic Universe has changed *Trump* himself. While he was always pretty terrible, I don't think his brain used to be such utter RWCU conspiracy pudding, like it is now.

I am almost sure he believes this. This imbecile has lived in the Fox News Cinematic Universe for the past two decades, where all major blue cities were razed to the ground.

I'd like to thank the below post for finally prompting me to make this moment from SNL UK that lives utterly rent-free in my brain, into a GIF:

there is a strain of lefty discourse where you can’t come to any unflattering conclusions about the populace—those must be explained away by how they are being acted upon by capital—but I think you’ll understand things better if you understand capital can also exploit weaknesses it didn’t create

Amnesty's capitulation is unacceptable, because a human rights NGO is not simply a discount think tank (viz. a double discounted research university). It's part of its job description to specifically leverage its resources to stand its ground against actual and threatened SLAPPs from bad actors!

1. Hank Green is a fucking treasure. 2. People need to stop treating him saying he used LLMs a bit for research on his own channel, not for any Complexly content, and decided he should probably stop, as him supposedly admitting to an array of wild, totally hallucinated things that *didn't happen*.

This also ties into the core insight that arguing with antivaxxers on the internet left me with: People believe in conspiracy theories because they get stuff out of it. So while it's irrational to believe this stuff, the psychological cost of reconsidering it, makes reconsidering it irrational.

the point of most conspiracism isn't the prescription, it's the diagnosis. it lets people feel like they are cutting through complex information and accessing a secret truth. lab leak itself isn't always conspiratorial but this fauci stuff gives people a little hit of that.

I think people often think accounts online are bots when they're just human beings with so little ability to reason that they have reduced themselves to something indistinguishable from a machine.

Do the police generally warn people not to commit terrorism because they’ll be arrested if they do? And if they don’t, would we say this is different because it’s deeply idiotic, as well as insulting and insanely authoritarian

The activist group Defend Our Juries has planned a mass show of support for the proscribed group Palestine Action outside Westminster Magistrates' Court tomorrow.
Expressing support for Palestine Action is an offence under the Terrorism Act. Those who do so will be arrested.

I think it’s mostly because the TERF variant of transphobia is a very online conspiracy theory, and like with others, people who go down the rabbit hole get so much out of embracing it (superiority, a cause, a hobby, identity, social connections) that reconsidering it becomes personally irrational.

This goes in general, it's remarkable how many of the anti-trans crowd become *obsessive* - it feels like this peculiar bigotry becomes all consuming for an unusual proportion of people who feel it, I am not sure why.

Ugh, sorry Americans, if you don't know who Trevor Phillips is yet, well, let's just say it doesn't surprise me in the slightest that Bari Weiss hired a nasty British guy who was previously suspended from the Labour party for Islamophobia and is of course a transphobic bigot too.

Per sources at CBS, Nick Bilton just sent out an email confirming the new correspondents at 60 Minutes. Besides Ross Douthat, he's announced Norah O'Donnell, Sebastian Junger Gianna Toboni and Trevor Phillips will have roles on the show.
