We already do this and companies who want them are happy to pay for PhD student interns. Why do precious and limited NSF funds need to be deployed for this? Most PhD student pursue industry jobs anyways - that has always been true. Use NSF funds to support basic science that industry wont support!

With academic jobs few and far between, the NSF is testing a new approach to graduate education: Giving Ph.D. students industry experience — and dollars — as part of their training. For more, see my latest for @statnews.com. www.statnews.com/2026/07/29/h...

I have two preprints out (and under review/revision) and another coming soon (linked below), and I go up for tenure next spring. So if your department is looking for a speaker - call me! (Actually do not. Email me. I am a millennial and unexpected phone calls give me anxiety). 🧪

East Oxford’s all-women punk band The HorMones are releasing their debut singles this month. The band, aged between 52 and 80, first took up their instruments in 2023, and have been shaking up the Oxford music scene with their fierce blend of anger, humour and cheekiness - the epitome of punk.

Another Voice: Proposed federal changes will upend expert review of science grants

If the new proposed OMB rule is implemented, every federal grant would instead be subject to review by political appointees, instead of by expert reviewers.

GLP-1 was discovered as a glucagon-like peptide encoded by preproglucagon in 1987 in research funded by NIH (NIDDK). Subsequent academic studies demonstrated that GLP-1 acts in an opposite manner than does glucagon, promoting lowering blood glucose level. 4/7

Running a successful small business & training the next generation of scientists/physicians/dentists/educators/entrepreneurs for under $1M/year. And so grateful to taxpayers for this amazing opportunity

When I explain to peeps how much we do in research labs for how few $$, they simply don’t believe me. I once explained it to a famous person from Pixar, he looked me square in the eye and said “You mean all the cancer, vision, and Alzheimer’s grants work that way? You’ve gotta be %#ing kidding me!”

The NIH is an ENORMOUS bargain for the American people. Do folk think that private industry will do the background slog work for drug discovery for 250K direct costs?

Agree! This proposed rule is critical to science but also critical to everything the government does… housing, education, medical care, transportation, infrastructure, parks, etc. Glad to see the science community is so activated but really everyone should be!
