My piece for @yorkshirebylines.co.uk is still available. The real problem was abandonment. When the pits closed and the mills shut down, it wasn't just jobs that were lost they also lost their banks, their community centres, their local shops and their sense of pride.

I will just say: there are good reasons why many marginalised authors are self-publishing. For instance, at the moment trad pub is anecdotally pulling away from picking up as many LGBTQ+ books (including romance), because of the rise of repressive attitudes in the US/UK, including book bans.
