I have to say that even with the surmounting challenges with this administration, I still love my job. I will stay and do my best to learn and teach and make every curious student feel like they belong.

HHMI just cancelled our grant. We were in the second year of developing programs to retain students from all backgrounds in STEM. All that work, all that energy…..I am profoundly disappointed. Well-funded HHMI labs, what do you think of dismantling funding for these training programs?

If anyone has the resources to resist, its HHMI. Ending this program with no notice and literally scrubbing evidence it ever existed from the website is shocking and dosappointing

I absolutely love this amazing original piece of art by my student Terry Wu. I missed the adult frog made from lab paper towels the first time I saw it. Such amazing talent and excited to see biology inspiring our students! Thank you Terry!

Dear fellow scientists, Go talk to the press about what is going on. Talk to local news about how it will impact jobs. Be specific, but don't pity yourself. Instead focus on how your own situation affects local jobs, the national economy, beating the growing scientific race with China. Suggestions:

American science and medicine has been thrown into chaos and uncertainty over the past week. Here are some stories to get up to speed. 1/12

Asking for opinions: Are specific aims in a grant proposal better written as questions or statements? I have always written them a statements but I recently was told that questions are preferred.

Took a break for dinner and a chance to think about other things. My wife was working on the Monday New York Times crossword (which is always posted early). She asked me 51 Across "Funding sources for many labs" I took a look... (Spoiler alert)

The rapid actions of the Trump Administration to shut down all communication by NIH, thus putting both study sections and councils on hold, is challenging for all of us. We can make our voices known. Below is an example email I sent to both NC Senators (text in alt text) 1/2 🧪

Bipartisan support for NIH and biomedical research is key to retaining US leadership
Dear Sen. Tillis,
I am a constituent, a Professor at UNC-Chapel Hill and a biomedical researcher with 33 years of funding from NIH. You have been a strong supporter of NIH and biomedical research, recognizing the impact of the more than $2 billion in funding NIH brings to NC Universities and its broader economic impact. The US has led in biomedical research for many decades, yielding impressive improvements in treatment of cancer and heart disease, and stunning new opportunities to use gene therapy in diseases like Type 1 diabetes and sickle cell disease. In the last 10 years, China has massively increased investment in science, and is threatening our lead. To remain competitive, we need to continue our investment. The actions this week by the Trump Administration to shut down NIH study sections and pause funding sent shock waves through our community. We need to resume bipartisan support for NIH or lose a generation of scientists. I would like to connect with the aide in the Tillis office who handles HHS and NIH and have a conversation about these issues--please have them email me.
Thank you for your past support
Mark Peifer

The antidote for despair is action ❤️ * Dial (202) 224-3121 * Enter zip code * Leave voicemail * Say “My name is ___, I’m a constituent in [town]. (If clinician/scientist, say so) “The NIH freeze harms research and patients and must be lifted immediately.” Be brief. Staffers tally all calls. Go! ✅

NIH funding supports the vast majority of all biomedical research in the United States. Virtually every advance in American medicine and biological science comes from NIH. This is a blow against American science. Call Congress, 202-224-3121.
