Our epistemic claims are trustworthy and reliable as a profession because we have standards. If we don't make those standards notorious, by enforcing them, the public will have no reason to know or understand why they should believe what we say.

Yeah, okay, I agree with you here. People who engage in research misconduct do and should face drumming out by their peers, up and including losing tenure. Not even a hard case for me. There are in fact tribunals! I've sat on them!

I find the idea that you can't police the truth in academia to be strange. Plenty of people get fired for lying in their work (mostly in STEM but not exclusively). Some countries prosecute researchers who get grant money using fraudulent data. All this requires some sort of truth policing.

I don't think the premise is true. Every year academics get fired for faking data, and some have been criminally prosecuted. You just need to scroll Retraction Watch.

This entire story is shocking. And anyone who thinks that defending plagiarism or academic misconduct is somehow justfiable, or in any way helps the fight against racism, is utterly misguided. It is the exact opposite.

🧵Looked quite a bit over past week at appeal of Burnham, what about Badenoch, whose approvals have risen significantly since a low last Autumn, when barely 10% of voters gave her a gross positive approval, to over 30% and higher net approval than Farage, Polanski & Davey.

Here are some of the research inconsistencies we found, in addition to quote & citation issues found by @retractionwatch.com. Inaccurate participant labelling appears 25+ times in 3 papers. Arday: "It’s more likely that I’ve made a mistake, there’s a clerical error. It’s not that I’ve fabricated.”

also there's two separate sets of accusations for Arday; he got the TES story - done by legitimate journalists and credible academics - killed by legal threats, and then an online racist stumbled upon the material separately.

Lauren Edwards, who’s bringing back the assisted dying bill, has responded to Andy Burnham’s comments. She argues improving social and palliative care can go hand in hand with assisted dying as per some other nations. She also notes a 4 year implementation period for the bill.
