I report on the Bay Area, mostly Richmond and Vallejo these days for Richmondside and The Vallejo Sun. I post about Oakland too and might editorialize a bit about the town. I live there. Feel free to reach out: Zack.Haber@gmail.com
damn this is so cynical. i actually like talking with taxi drivers sometimes!
Any ex-Little Hill Lounge workers want to talk on or off the record 🤔? Zack.Haber@gmail.com
If you want to learn about how police pursuits work these days in Vallejo, check out my report for the Vallejo Sun! I spent several months diving deep into tons of data for this: www.vallejosun.com/vallejo-poli...
Vallejo police promised fewer pursuits, but dangers of car chases remain
Three years of data show Vallejo police regularly chased people for nonviolent crimes. The pursuits regularly ended in injuries, and occasionally deaths to bystanders and suspects.

What interrupts visual landscapes more, giant ads trying to sell people things most people don't even want (I'm thinking of tech AI billboards, but not just that) or graffiti like this? I think it's impressive that people made it up that high long enough to leave those tags...
Still love how Russell Westbrook decided to tweet out his own name a dozen years ago…
I'm back to masking in indoor public spaces as COVID seems to be surging in the Bay Area again. There's no longer wastewater data available in the East Bay, but check out this chart covering the eastern half of SF. A solid surge since August. Highest it's been all year...
I can’t understand why anyone would be against this. This USPS truck is dripped the fuck out. Shout out to the vandal…
I know the Aspiration stuff is gonna get all the attention, but when Adam Silver meets with the media in a week, someone needs to ask him if believes it's okay for the owner of an NBA team to be keeping a registry of his fans' sexualities, because this is just demented stuff.
This story keeps getting more evil.
The state seized 12 of Buck Kamphausen's Vallejo properties he owned through his cemetery business after a judge ruled he'd been mismanaging cemeteries. But now he's transferring the properties to another business he owns. My latest for @vallejosun.bsky.social www.vallejosun.com/vallejo-busi...
Vallejo businessman takes back real estate seized by state
California’s Cemetery and Funeral Bureau took control of the properties last year after a lengthy court battle.

Still working on this btw. Thought it would be like 800 words but at least 14 people have reached out to me and I'm already at 1200 words. Keep an eye out!
Apparently there were 15+ arrests last night at an informal Pride event in SF. If you were there or have info, DM me or hit me on Signal @misoshnik.13 You can be anonymous
It's deeply journalistically unethical to name normal folks with little power who are charged (not even convicted) of minor crimes such as vandalism. Shame on the local TV news stations and the SFChronicle.

Anyone got any tips for good podcasts about plants, or ecology in general?
I mean, they better not. It’s already the most expensive transit system in the USA. Not much of a flex here, honestly.
Unlike many rail systems around the country, BART is not implementing surge pricing for FIFA. Riders pay the regular fare.

O n our way up to do some camping at Stanislaus National Forest we see a little anti-Trump protest near Angels Camp. One woman holds an Ukraine flag and a sign that reads “REAGAN WOULD SHIT” lol Pretty depressing to see folks glorifying Reagan, regardless of how bad Trump is 🙄
Just noticed when The Oakland Post published this in the print edition they took out the word "communist" without my permission and replaced it with "progressive ideals" lol. Luckily they let me publish it here how I wanted to...
I wrote a short essay / review about Boots Riley's new film 'I Love Boosters,' where I touch on communism and loneliness. It's slatted to appear in print in The Oakland Post soon, but you can read it here now. Tried my best to avoid spoilers... zackhaber.medium.com/alienation-i...

Judging from the press release I just got, we'll soon get a flurry of stories saying homelessness has dropped significantly in Alameda County / Oakland. Do we know that to be the case for sure though? Check out my story on how the homeless census is conducted: thestreetspirit.org/2026/02/02/i...
