it’s been a very sad day within our v big, v active (with v strong record of funding!) linguistics/modern languages group at nottingham💔 still just so lost for words at how incredulous this is (esp finding out via an instagram bbc news post & STILL not from uni comms…) www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

I am hearing that @uniofnottingham.bsky.social is suspending (i.e shutting down) *all modern language courses* in 2026-27. One of the largest departments in the UK. A shocking short sighted move that damages regional and national prospects @britishacademy.bsky.social @hetanshah.bsky.social

Truly awful news. Ruthless, short-sighted and ill-informed. I remember working at @uniofnottingham.bsky.social about a decade ago and the University taking great pride in being one of the biggest languages departments in the country… Where’s that pride gone?! www.bbc.com/news/article...?

somewhat poignant yet comforting end to our AHRC Midlands4Cities returners day in Birmingham, from a room full of incredible, impostery phd students all just muddling through.🥹❤️‍🩹 and now i officially enter second year… what!! 😵‍💫

had a nightmare last night about results day (??) where i opened my results live on TV, saw i didn’t get an A* in my french a level and meant i couldn’t do my c19th french gorilla placement anymore 🦍 what 😭 your honour take me away i fear i’ve officially lost the plot with this sodding gorilla- 😵‍💫‼️

I welcome the UK Government’s commitment to recognise the State of Palestine, but it shouldn’t be subject to conditions. It must be unequivocal, irreversible and backed by sanctions on Israel. Israel must agree to a ceasefire now and allow more aid into Gaza to stop starvation.

When I pointed out King’s will lose 90% of its AHRC student-led places under the new scheme, I got piled on by the AHRC Chair claiming I was wrong and scaremongering. It wasn’t quite 90%. This year King’s students got 27 AHRC student-led scholarships. Next year they’re giving us 3. So 89% then.

'The number of student-initiated PhD scholarships funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) is set to fall by 60 per cent when new doctoral training arrangements come into effect next year, new figures show.' 1/3

excited to be sharing preliminary research from my PhD (on language contact in Vienna) at the @oxfordgerman.bsky.social ‘German Graduate Symposium’ in a v sunny oxford today☀️, with broader themes of ‘constructions of sameness, constructions of difference: identity discourses in Germanophone culture’

so many chaotically nonsensical (but v exciting!) things going on in the phd over the next few months that i fear i’m entering whatever the academic equivalent is of a brat summer💚

Such fun discussions today at the Natural History Museum (London) on ‘named historical animals’ & my AHRC-funded M4C placement w/ Nottingham Museums/Uni of Nottingham (with Dr Holly Miller), in which I’ll be researching & decolonising the C19th history of George the Gorilla. Next stop: Paris..?🇫🇷🦍🔎

The basic foundation of DEI is that bringing people with different experiences together to solve pressing social problems is a good thing and that structural barriers need to be addressed for this to become a reality. The fact that this is controversial is an indictment on this country.
