Sitting here this morning after driving 13 hours yesterday, putting the finishing touches on my father's obituary. I was not expecting to be back in Wisconsin this soon after last month's visit... I'm tired of being an adult, and shit hasn't even started to get real yet on this trip.

Went to a paint-and-sip tonight at the local brewery that was sponsored by Centre County PAWS, the shelter where we adopted Lady. Felt good to get out, see a cute shelter pup named Hershey, get some dog kisses, paint for the first time in a long while, and give to a good cause.

What's the vibe, going into today?

Came to campus early to work. Got to my office. Oh yeah... they rekeyed all the doors in my building. My brain wasn't much into working early anyway. It was just something to try to occupy my time before teaching, and I feel bad for falling behind on everything else while Lady was still with us.

I really didn't want to sleep last night. I was tired as hell, and sleepy, and I did eventually crash. But I dreaded waking up and not having Lady making any demands. No puppy to wake me up. To demand food. To plead for a walk. This was the feeling I dreaded upon waking up. And I hate it.

Sitting outside this evening together, @mmbigalke.bsky.social saw a shooting star. That was Lady — a shooting star burning brilliantly for her moment in our lives. I'll remember her lots of ways, but one that sticks now is her nestled cozily in a pile of blankets and pillows. Sweet dreams, pup.

I hate that she is gone. The house feels so empty without even her flagging energy, but she was so contented the whole way to her final visit. Cancer is such an indiscriminate asshole. She joined the family on a Wednesday and left us on a Tuesday. In between, we got 347 amazing weeks together...

After consulting with the vet and watching her struggle to move in the early afternoon, we chose to say goodbye to Lady. She wolfed down a bacon cheeseburger and got to dress up in her Wonder Woman outfit for her final visit. She was the first dog I've ever had that loved the vet. What a treasure.
