Aficionado's corner: An aptamer is a short single-stranded piece of DNA or RNA that is designed to bind very specifically to a target molecule, much like an antibody does but with some advantages. The name comes from the Latin "aptus" meaning "to fit." The aptamer they use here is called 1R6.
