i don't think there was ever a magical time when audiences would universally embrace downer endings or moral ambiguity or whatever with zero complaints. i think we just used to not get blasted by random strangers' opinions on fiction 24/7 before we had social media
the attempts to explain what's made modern audiences rankle at more complex stories like "people watch too many marvel movies" or whatever fall flat for me because fans have kind of always been like this lol. people in 1980 said the empire strikes back was bad because it was too dark and depressing
