Big root beer guy. Once and future trader. 34th place crossword solver for two consecutive years. Appreciator of the fact that the 1999 New Orleans Saints had two quarterbacks named Billy Joe.

if establishment candidates want to start winning primaries again all you have to do is say that rich people have too much money and that youll prosecute trump admin staffers and republicans that have broken the law

As a centerleft Democrat my least favorite political actors after Republicans are center-left Democrats who don’t vote for a leftist in a general election. I don’t like leftist defection but i get it - they are frustrated and they are a little less smart. If leftists win a primary we must VBNMW them

This list is mostly fine. The problems are: Jordan and LeBron should be much closer (LeBron should be #1, but it’s fine to have Jordan #1) Wilt’s numbers are incredible, but if Wilt’s teams could have traded him for Russell they would have in an instant. The Celtics wouldn’t have made that trade.

Who's the consensus best NBA player of all time? MJ or LeBron? To find out, I compiled all of the journalist player rankings that I could find. I found 54 in total. Here's what the experts think...

If The River was a little better, The River/Nebraska/Born In The USA (Bruce) would work. For me, Sigh No More/Babel/Wilder Mind (Mumford) is pretty excellent. Transatlanticism/Plans/Narrow Stairs (Death Cab) is top 17 at least. Her Majesty/Picaresque/Crane Wife (Decemberists) is top 22 at least.

What's the best three album run from a band? OP did Rush, so I’ll do my second favorite band, Dream Theater: Images and Words Awake Falling into Infinity

Here is a fun political fact. Both of these people, from their posts, have completely unacceptable evil politics. Neither of them are consistent members of a good coalition. However! Both of them are significantly better than every Republican. Great. Good luck everyone.

Good-faith concern on this issue would be going, "hmm, professional sports leagues should probably have some standards in place to ensure trans competitors aren't getting an unfair advantage," googling for 5 minutes, realizing every sports league already has those standards and dropping it.

i don't believe anyone has "good-faith" concerns about trans women in sports in 2026. there's been too much time to hear the actual evidence, the actual people affected, and the role the debate plays in attempts to purge trans people from American life. anybody picking that side has made a choice

I think it's good that Mamdani is Just Doing Stuff but more people gotta realize that it is not a matter of Will or motivation or whatever but because the NYC Mayor, as an office, is one of the uniquely powerful individual offices you can hold in the United States (seriously)

pretty much the only political position that matters in 2026 is whether or not you agree the current Republican Party is an existential threat to liberal democracy in the United States i struggle to find any motivation to care that much about anything else

I don't really like how people keep saying "gambling" in the context of the 50k versus 0/1m thing. To me gambling means making a negative expectancy decision because you *want* the risk. This particular hypothetical is making a negative expectancy decision to minimize risk.

$50k now versus 50% chance of $1m is perfect Bluesky discourse because 1) it allows people who can do math and people who are angry about income inequality to talk past each other 2) market economies provide a very obvious solution (sell stakes in the coin flip) that has to be disallowed

By far the funniest moment in Homer’s Odyssey is when Circe says, “Shall we have sex?” and Odysseus says, “You just turned all my men into pigs. You have the GALL to think I would sleep with you? Of course I will. Absolutely. But don’t do any weird spells”

photograph of the relevant passage in Fitzgerald's translation of the Odyssey ("I make no bed of love with you upon it. Or swear me first a great oath, if I do, you'll work no more enchantment to my harm.")

i haven't joined DSA yet (I might) but I am curious to see how they handle 2028 because a) they have more momentum than they have had in a long time and I commend them for it and b) if AOC runs for president and they don't endorse her it would be the funniest and stupidest own goal imaginable

the abbot of unreason (an archaeologist)@merovingians.bsky.social · 3w ago

some new DSA people might be looking at this current blowup and thinking we're heading for a split, all I can do is tell you a split has been a lot more likely in the past than it is now. the org united behind Zohran and electoralism in a way it never was before 2025.

bad faith readings on here between people that most Americans would consider to have functionally indistinguishable politics (not picking on the quoted post in particular, people do it all the time here) are exhausting and annoying, and I wish people would stop doing that

It really is something the degree to which a lot of liberals think the core problem with trump is that he's rude, rather than all his policies

he will not have the resume to be the overall GOAT (or really even close) but unless something happens to prevent him from playing in the next couple Cups I don't see how Kylian Mbappé doesn't go down as the greatest World Cup player of all time 20 goals in 20 games is just obscene

the thing is that despite the fact that the second post agrees with the first post, the first post is wrong and stupid and vicious and the second post is basically right. is shoplifting good? No, of course not, everyone who thinks so is 12 and stupid. Should you report shoplifters? Ehhhhhhh…no
