I think for best comic strips it’s basically this (the long version) and the “bats aren’t bugs” sequence

Big root beer guy. Once and future trader. 34th place crossword solver for two consecutive years. Appreciator of the fact that the 1999 New Orleans Saints had two quarterbacks named Billy Joe.
On Sunday, parents across the five boroughs got a night to themselves while NY's Cutest enjoyed free activities with NYC Parks staff at select recreation centers. Free & accessible child care doesn’t just make our city more affordable — it gives parents time to rest, recharge, or enjoy a night out.
This past weekend, New York City launched its first Parents’ Night Out, a new initiative by Mayor Zohran Mamdani to give families four hours of free babysitting. It was a hit.
I wouldn't be a good chef, but I could cook for a year for $250m as long as my hot air balloon didn't crash or whatever
You're offered $250,000,000 but to claim it you must enter the last video game you've played and stay there for a full year. How are y'all faring in this deal?
I don't think this is right, but I haven't been there in a few years and it's possible that their mindset has changed (or that mindset does not always reflect reality) I guess it is reasonable to say that the lines between hedge fund and market maker can blur when you're willing to take on risk
. @ghose.bsky.social on Jane Street's $15bn July loss Jane Street is a hedge fund, stop calling it a market maker rupakghose.substack.com/p/jane-stree...
This is a funny (and stupid) battle because the Bulwark and the DSA are both mostly ok but their primary failure is not hating Republicans enough (the Bulwark because they wish they could be Republicans but they have >0 conscience and the DSA because they spend their time fighting Democrats)
"The DSA—the official organ—is forking nuts. So nuts that if you told me that the DSA was a false flag operation run by the Heritage Foundation in order to discredit the Democratic party, it would make sense." Today's Triad from @jvl.bsky.social:
Good news: I came in 9th place at Lollapuzzoola in a pretty strong field! Bad news: @gppasco.bsky.social solved downs only to give himself a handicap and give the rest of the field a chance…and finished 8th. Even downs only he’s still better than I am.
Phoebe Bridgers, Weird Al Yankovic, Mumford And Sons probably the best from three
Describe your music taste in 3 artists, no genres. lol no that's not possible
Okay, yes, I know this is maybe the oldest genre of post, but: CAN YOU IMAGINE IF SOLDIERS WERE ATTEMPTING SUICIDE BECAUSE OBAMA DEPLOYED THEM TOO LONG, AND IT WAS ALL OVER THE NEWS, AND OBAMA WAS LIKE “YOU KNOW WHAT?? SCREW THE TROOPS. THOSE PANSIES HAVE IT EASY AND SHOULD SUFFER MORE.”
One major worry has been that the military might support Trump in some sort of coup. I think that is now less likely. www.cnn.com/2026/08/14/p...
After letting a bit of a buildup happen, I'm 85 crosswords behind going into Lollapuzzoola tomorrow. And working 5 pm - 1 am tonight. I can't do them all, but maybe I can do 40-50.
very funny that the sequence of events went —years of people saying "NFL players would easily beat Team USA flag football players" —somebody holds a "flag football vs. NFL" tournament, Team USA wins every game in a blowout, scoring on literally every drive —Team USA loses to Taulia Tagovailoa
… wasn’t the USA Flag Football team boasting that NFL players could never do what they do at an international level? And now they’re out here getting roasted by a mid-tier Big 10 quarterback???

Here’s a comedy equals tragedy plus time fact about old time athletes being built different. I told a friend about Carl Mays killing Ray Chapman with a pitch in 1920, and he said “I feel like I would retire. How can you pitch after that?” Carl Mays *led the league in innings pitched* in 1921.
And which is more serious: 1) A silly campus protest 2) Someone said a mean thing Leftishly 3) Armed agents of the state murdering people 4) A political party using the state to silence dissent. (3) and (4) are very obviously a much bigger deal than (1) or (2), not that you can tell from the NYT.
Spoiler for season 3 episode 3 of The Sopranos: it's absolutely ridiculous that a team down by 12 points would kick a field goal with 45 seconds left. No chance that would happen. Unless, I suppose, the coach had money on the 11 point spread.
I'm sorry, Hard Knocks. You can't describe something as "off the charts" while you are actively showing a chart.
There was a restaurant that had unbelievably delicious Wagyu beef at high but not exorbitant prices. I loved it. But every time I went there I was basically the only person there. This state of affairs lasted for about six months and then the restaurant closed.
arguing that Bluesky is nice because it's tiny and not growing is a bit like saying your local bar is great because it's always empty, it does make for a nice customer experience for you personally but that experience is probably going to be very time limited
when actual reality is inconvienient, the RW press creates a fake, alternate reality cope to live inside. so mamdani becomes an unpopular failure, NYC, the safest and richest city in the country, becomes a dangerous hellhole. Intermediated through screens, conservatives move to the fake world
Poll results vs. how poll results are presented in the Wall Street Journal.
The difference between the Republican Party and the idiots on here who are like “the Chinese Communist Party is good, and if you disagree you’re an evil nationalist” is that you don’t have to think about the latter because there arent enough of them and they’re all assholes. Inshallah the GOP’s fate
the questions of whether prediction markets, drugs, alcohol, casinos, lotteries should be legal are all variations on the same question: "how much responsibility does the government have to protect you from the consequences of your own stupidity?"
There was Paulie Two Times; we called him that because he always wrote two letters. “I’m gonna go write to the Thessalonians, write to the Thessalonians”
There was Peter. We called him the Rockman, because he was the foundation of everything else was built. Big Jim and Little Jim. "Doubting" Thomas.
Singer: Baa baa black sheep, have you any Beastie Boys: [WOOL] Yes sir yes sir, [THREE] bags [FULL] One for my [MASTER] One for my [DAME] One for the [LITTLE] Girl who [LIVES] down the [LANE]
On CNN, El-Sayed is asked about this Trump post. He says it represents "two different visions of America:" "Two people who don't like each other but are joined in the interest of making billions of dollars off of you. Or, two people who genuinely love each other, enjoying some panacakes together."
“Orange man bad” is the most consistently correct take in U.S. politics for the past decade. The people who disagreed that Trump is a fascist profoundly misunderstood politics and should have much, much more humility going forward.
This line from Ross Douthat’s final NYT column is something you see all the time from the soft-MAGA right. Sure, Trump’s *most* alarmist critics weren’t correct, but that’s basically true of every president. Trump’s *median* critic did in fact predict his presidency pretty accurately.
I believe in downright punitive taxation on the wealthy, I also, statistically, believe in raising *your* taxes
It's not the top 1% or the top 5% or the top 10%. You have to tax the top 70% to pay for the social democracy we need. I make $95k and my taxes should be higher. Once again, with feeling: every nation with universal health care levies a VAT. Everyone contributes something. Yes, that means you.
If you’re comparing Julia Louis-Dreyfuss to a Los Angeles Laker, do you go Kareem (Seinfeld Bucks years, Old Christine late 70s, Veep Showtime) or Kobe (Seinfeld Shaqobe, Old Christine the Smush Parker years, Veep the Gasol/Odom titles)
this led to some conversations during one of which somebody suggested that I must have not had a problem with Platner’s tattoo. I blocked the biggest jerk and everything else died down, I’m not important. But “it isn’t important whether or not what you say is true” is not confined to one ideology.
he's been having some form of crashout for a while but a) he's very obviously not a Nazi b) people correctly talk about friend-enemy politics all the time given that "to understand something is to support it" is the worst Bluesky brainworm held by the worst Bluesky people, we should all avoid it
When my friends cite Schmitt it is because they are well-learned, well-meaning people who understand the stakes and have done the homework required to know their enemy. When my enemies cite Schmitt it's because they're Nazi's.
