The goal with this system was to give the destruction a sense of real heft and scale. Knocking over a building is a big deal and it should feel like a big deal! I also wanted mechs to feel dangerous, and being able to accidentally level an apartment complex fits the bill IMO

There's nothing new under the sun! You *will* develop your own style as long as you write unchained! That's keeps you from sounding derivative, no matter how closely you hew to a genre's tropes!
