A fragment cast adrift

Middle-aged nerd, amateur hobbyist. Tired of being tired.

Woke up, made coffee, and sat at my laptop where companies gathered and shared information about my news consumption, entertainment preferences, shopping habits, and more. When I left the house, my departure time was recorded by my smart lock and my doorbell camera captured what I was wearing. 🧵

In my experience, at least half the time they consider it but don't actually want to hear about it. Or they think it's a good idea in theory but don't want to invest in the work it takes to do it because it "costs too much" or "slows things down."

I will also never get over realizing how many professionals who build products never, not once contemplate “perhaps I should get feedback from the people who are supposed to use this product on what they want, and then follow up with them later”

Grand Theft Auto going digital-only “is illustrative of the moment that we’re in, that things are online, and that there is a digitisation of so many kinds of tools and services, from gaming to accessing a doctor,” EFF’s Paige Collings told @eurcorrespond.bsky.social. “It's the absence of choice.”

You can buy the game, but it's never really yours

Casual reminder that the myth of “pulling yourself up by your bootstraps” is a cruel hoax designed to convince poor people from all walks of life that the injustices they face are a result of their own actions, rather than an oppressive system rigged against them.

Passing the polling place, signs sprouting from the roadside, I saw a grandpa wearing an I Can’t Breathe t-shirt walking a kid into school, and so I introduced my daughter to “A Small Needful Fact” in the car line.

A Small Needful Fact

Is that Eric Garner worked
for some time for the Parks and Rec.i
Horticultural Department, which means,
perhaps, that with his very large hands,
perhaps, in all likelihood,
he put gently into the earth
some plants which, most likely,
some of them, in all likelihood,
continue to grow, continue
to do what such plants do, like house
and feed small and necessary creatures,
like being pleasant to touch and smell,
like converting sunlight
into food, like making it easier
for us to breathe.
