Lukewarm to cold take: 4e D&D did saving throws better than 5e. Tie two ability scores to one of 3 saving throws and then choose the higher of those abilities. Reduces the save or suck, saving throws actually went up even if they were bad, etc.

i think playing story games with facilitators who understand that they are just as smart as you is incredibly healing if you've played a lot of bad dnd, and helps you learn to use a lot of narrative tools you otherwise might not touch. letting daddy do all the deciding and describing...

i think a lot of prospective GMs and players learn this paternalistic view of facilitation from actual plays where the GM's storytelling genius is emphasized above all else. i don't think it's the only thing that feeds this view (we live in a paternalistic society) but it certainly builds culture
