Trump’s exhibit focuses on the nation’s first executive mansion, Washington, slavery broadly — and also includes a few panels about the people enslaved by Washington in Philly. The panel renderings were previously criticized for minimizing slavery and whitewashing Washington’s culpability.
After the Civil War, Congress anticipated white lawmakers in the South would use the criminal legal system to stop Black people from voting, so they readmitted southern states under strict conditions. States have been violating those conditions since.
