COYOTE: a mission statement and manifesto COYOTE, at its simplest, is a zine of therian, alterhuman, and human-questioning artistry and expression; and yet, much like the multitudinous animal from which it takes its name, it aspires to much more than this description suggests. it is a forum that provides the greater alterhuman community the seriousness we deserve; but also a festival that promises us space for revelry and joy; and a front for our collective liberation from an otherwise indifferent world. whether through spirited polemic or avant garde poetry—contemplative fiction or creative non-fiction—COYOTE is a communal work which utilizes every weapon in a collective arsenal to combat the chauvinistic notion that humanity is all there ever is or can be. COYOTE is multivariate in its influences: it takes after the affable animal itself, which has prevailed and proliferated in spite of its intense persecution; the trickster deity long described by Indigenous folklore, who can never quite be satisfied with things as they are even when this spells trouble for themselves; and the queer sex work activists who before our time took COYOTE as the name for their own cause, handing a voice to the voiceless and power to the powerless. COYOTE embodies each of these moments and more, and stands for the fullest realization of what they embody in our lifetime. call off your tired old ethics! above all, COYOTE attempts to evoke purposeful emotion in a time where our attention is endlessly exploited, and speak sense in a space rife with senseless slop. we want to explore everything which is adventurous; joyous; provocative; and especially subversive—and we want to do so with intention. we think this is the only legacy befitting of an animal once called our continent's ‘original Bolshevik.’ just as the coyote echoes its cry across this continent, COYOTE too echoes the cry of liberation that came before: come out, you of therian expression!
