🎄 A podcast salute to all holiday specials, but mostly the Christmas ones by @makewistful.com. Mind the icy patch. 🎧 https://adventcalendar.house

The Muppet Christmas Carol is great because Michael Caine treats the Muppets like riveting guns, and Muppet Treasure Island is great because Tim Curry treats himself like a Titleist golf bag.

Sam Neill was such a great actor and human being that any time John Carpenter went on an all-time hater rant against Chevy Chase, he would pause to gush about how much he loved Neill.

Black text, white background: Carpenter continued, “God, I don’t want to talk about why, but let’s just say there were personalities on that film. He shall not be named who needs to be killed. No, no, no, that’s terrible. He needs to be set on fire. No, no, no. Anyway, it’s all fine. I survived it.”

While not naming that individual, the “Halloween” auteur then clarified that Neill, for one, is a “terrific actor, I love working with him” and compared Neill’s acting style to that of Kurt Russell. “He comes prepared. He knows what he’s going to do,” Carpenter said. “He reacts to other actors who are there. I mean, he’s just a dream come true.”It gave me a chance to make a quasi-serious movie. But Chevy Chase, Sam Neill — who I love and had a longtime friendship with — and Warner Bros. … I worked for them, and it was pleasant. No, it wasn’t pleasant at all. I’m lying to you. It was a horror show. I really wanted to quit the business after that movie. God, I don’t want to talk about why, but let’s just say there were personalities on that film … he shall not be named who needs to be killed. No, no, no, that’s terrible. He needs to be set on fire. No, no, no. Anyway, it’s all fine. I survived it.

🎄 Today’s Christmas in July podcast is a deep cut. In 1989, The Disney Channel aired a special called “The Teddy Bears’ Picnic.” This year I learned it got a prequel. From 1992, here’s our episode on “The Teddy Bears’ Christmas,” with @durwoodclapper.bsky.social and @teeaitchare.bsky.social!
