Momotarō's Journey to Onigashima created by the renowned Japanese ukiyo-e artist Tsukioka Yoshitoshi in 1882. It depicts the famous folklore hero Momotarō alongside his loyal animal companions—a monkey, a dog, and a pheasant—marching toward Demon Island.

The narrative composition captures the intrepid youth Momotarō marching in profile, leading his loyal, anthropomorphized companions—a monkey, a dog, and a pheasant—on their expedition to subdue the marauding oni of Demon Island, having secured their allegiance with delicious millet dumplings (kibi-dango). Sartorially, the young hero is framed as an idealized juvenile warrior: he wears a brilliant scarlet surcoat (jinbaori) decorated with white horizontal shoulder bars over a green garment, paired with bold blue-and-white striped traveling leggings (kyahan) and woven straw sandals (waraji). Tucked into his sash is a long sword (katana) in a polished vermilion scabbard, while his neatly styled hair is embellished with a fan-shaped feather ornament.

Marching behind him in tight single file, his animal allies are charmingly imbued with distinct personalities and traditional attire. The Japanese macaque trots upright on two legs wearing a red dapple-dyed (kanoko-shibori) vest (chankanko), followed by a hound stepping alertly with a bright red bow knot tied around its neck. Bringing up the rear is a green pheasant (kiji), its long tail feathers sweeping the ground as it diligently bears a bamboo flagpole flying the hero's famous white banner emblazoned with the bold calligraphic slogan 「日本一」 (Nippon-ichi—"Number One in Japan"). Isolated against an unadorned, neutral paper background, Yoshitoshi dispenses with environmental scenery to focus entirely on silhouette, rhythmic spacing, and expressive posture
