(Also, joy of joys, I recently discovered both Gmail and Squarespace were plotting against me to hide author-related emails and send new sign ups into the Backrooms void so...if you tried to reach out via either of those paths recently and I've been ignoring you...please forgive me and try now.)

GOBLIN MARKET releases tomorrow, and today I'm putting the finishing touches on a one page RPG for you to play, FREE, NO FEY TRICKS. Check back tomorrow or subscribe to the newsletter to make sure you don't miss it: www.ajhackwith.com/newsletter

I am purposefully Not Here(tm) these days but let me say I continue to marvel at how many 'restorative justice' scholars pop out of the woodwork to educate us only when their favorite parasocial bro on the internet receives the slightest consequences for his past actions.

the crazy thing about making time for any creative pursuit is that you literally have to do what you have a gut-deep yearning to do or else you'll see other people doing it, and it WILL make you insane.

At worldcon, celebrating creativity… I turn on the tv in my hotel room and get inundated with nonstop AI-generated ads for gambling websites. The Germans must have a word for this kind of dystopic feeling.

missing: If anyone happened to find a small velvet bag full of moth stickers at WorldCon today, I am putting a bounty on its safe return. The adhd tax struck me early this year and I am moth-bereft. 💔

Have spent much of the day in a fluttery orbit around my Worldcon suitcase. I think I’m packed enough to begin the customary game of luggage scale chicken: how many book copies can I squeeze in before the airlines hate me?

Honestly one of the things i regret about being Not Here (meaning socials) anymore is that I can't boost and discover with folks more. But, a couple years ago my mental health made me choose between making tweets and making books and I chose the later.

What we should take away from this is boosting matters. If you enjoy a story: share it, yell about it, make fan things, request at libraries, etc. THAT'S 80% of the luck writers pray for. Gentle reader, YOU are the luck.

I am 90% sure my career wouldn't have happened if a couple people hadn't retweeted one of my stories the exact minute they did. You work your hardest, but it's not in your hands. It breaks a lot of people.

As a baby writer, I read a certain man's books and wanted to tell stories like that. I never imagined the twists that would lead us here. Awesome for things like this, but bittersweet. (honored as heck @jimchines.com )

I'm mostly done reworking the Magic ex Libris series. Cover art is done. References to HP works have been replaced with references to @rickriordan.bsky.social's books. The Gaiman book in REVISIONARY has been replaced with a book by @ajhackwith.bsky.social. This makes me happy.

Truth. That can sound unfairly discouraging so I try to frame publishing like a poker game rather than a crap shoot. Winning big will take real skill (with lucky draws) ...but you have to get a seat at the table first. I know better 'players' than me who never got that far.

I tell people all the time that I got lucky with my career and it annoys a lot of them. "No, but you're good," they will say, and I will say, yes, I am good, and also here are all these people who write as well as I do but did not get the same break, so being good isn't the issue, being lucky is.

How men feared women! she thought, walking among the late-flowering roses. Not as individuals, but women when they talked together, worked together, spoke up for one another - then men saw plots, cabals, constraints, traps being laid.
