Bikes aren’t the reason why traffic is bad. Cars getting in the way of other cars are. The best way to reduce traffic is to give people other options to get around. That means bikes. And transit. And pedestrian-first streets.

For me, LLMs are clearly powerful machines, but everything about their construction and deployment in society by the people constructing them appears oriented around achieving a political project that deeply conflicts with my values or a vision of a future I want to live in and dont have a choice in

This is what is driving me nuts. So many posters around here keep haw-hawing about R’s in strawberry and clearly have NO idea that these are extremely powerful machines *already* that we have not yet figured out how to utilize fully. If we stopped development today, they’d still be astonishing

That's part of the broken social contract that I don't think the no-take-only-throw-ass economics overlords don't get. I now see any funds I have as my only defense against indiscriminate predation. I have figured out you will kill me and drain my corpse.

also like, my measure of "wealth" now is how much of things going wrong you can bounce back from and maintain a basic standard of living. It is not about improving said standard of living. I want a house so I can't be priced out of my apartment. I want retirement money so I'm not homeless at 70.

I'm doing well! I never could have dreamed I'd be doing this well ten years ago. I'm still not spending more than $100 on anything without wanting to cry about it because I expect to be destitute the moment literally anything goes wrong.

The Economy being good means nothing to me because it's a measure of how confident assholes feel in their line going up, and everything they do to make the line go up hurts me and devastates everyone who's doing worse than me. This isn't fucking rocket surgery.

They will lay me off, they will end my health insurance, they will raise my rent until I can't afford it anymore, they will destroy the tools I use by making them shittier or subscription-based or both; everything I depend on or enjoy will be Disrupted for some boy-king dipshit's funding round

so like lemme weigh in on this as someone who is more financially comfortable than many in my generational cohort: everything I have gained seems precarious and temporary because I know the people with real money will take it all from me the second they get an opportunity and no one will protect me.

"People have stopped believing that the economy can be good, and have lost the willingness to admit that they are doing well. That pessimism might be harder to fix than an actual downturn," @annielowrey.bsky.social argues.

Spurs half-court offense seemed sluggish in the second quarter. Not much ball movement, not much off-ball movement, lots of dribbling out the shot clock before a desperation heave.

Wemby’s numbers aren’t even the story. It’s the way his mere presence kept OKC out of the paint. It won’t show up on any scoresheet, but his just being there prevented at least double-digit points.
