I said this about a week ago and I’ll absolutely repeat it again - while I found the plagiarism fascinating as an academic - I could not then or now understand how it was a leading national news story. Well. I can, but it’s nothing to do with the fakery. It’s culture wars, race, and click bait.

the concern with the Arday story isn’t the fact of the media coverage, it’s the volume. it’s perfectly reasonable that there would be some coverage of the story, and basically indefensible that there was as much as there was.

The term “witch hunt” is overused in politics. Perhaps not now. Quite a bit of the British media should ask themselves serious questions as to whether the coverage they gave to this man was remotely proportionate. Likewise there are Qs for Cambridge- and whether they discharged their duty of care.

Quite. As an academic I find it compelling, but also, I find the level of public attention and involvement odd. The guy is not the first or last chancer or fantasist to exist, and they’re certainly not just limited to the academy either.

I don't deny the Arday resignation is important news, but to have it as the top item on the Guardian, Times and Telegraph websites says something about the weight they all give to culture wars over substantive news on politics, the economy, the environment, international conflict etc

Reform have now lost six by-elections in a row in England, Scotland and Wales. Their national poll rating is 26% – below Labour in 1983 – and Farage’s approval rating is -37. They’re very far from the voice of the people and need to stop being treated as such.

I am not even remotely surprised by this. So much attention has been directed towards Twitter/X, and while it is a huge problem, much larger groups of particular demographic groups are on Facebook - often those with poor digital literacy.
