Just caught up with this incredible podcast from @sturdyalex.bsky.social I loved the movie. I have never read the poem. So it was amazing to listen to classicists and film buffs swap notes together. The most accessible Nolan film gets the most accessible review 👏👏👏

Saw the film yesterday and the first thing I wanted to do is listen to my fellow Greek @sturdyalex.bsky.social talk about it. As much as I loved the scale and vision of Nolan’s film for me it lacked the heart of the Odyssey… the Gods, the sex, the humour and some .. Greekness.

This is a very enjoyable follow up to seeing the film. Being familiar only with some of the most famous elements of the story it was interesting to hear about what was missing and what was different.

Even more remarkable given his back story. Eumaeus was of royal birth, abducted from the island of Syros as a child, and sold to King Laertes, but was raised with kindness as a brother to Odysseus. (Maybe acknowledgement of paternity issues?) This is why 'Zeus's Law' (Xenia) is paramount to Eumaeus.

I was just as excited to listen to this episode as I was to see the film itself, and it didn’t disappoint. What a fascinating conversation about the themes of The Odyssey and the compromises involved in adapting it into a three-hour film. It flew by and I can’t recommend it highly enough. Thank you!

If you can make such beautiful cinema and make a lot of money in the process, so that companies back other projects like it, well done. This episode is fabulous. Highly recommend for anyone who has seen The Odyssey… and you should see The Odyssey. One point brought up was the colour palette being very Nolan and not so Ancient Greece. I loved the film but definitely wish it had been vibrantly coloured. It’s very grey.
