The wasps in the wall just above my back door are still pretty active. They weren't really bothering us so I let them live: I didn't want a wall full of dead wasps and I read they'd leave the nest and die off in the autumn anyway. I'm beginning to wonder if they'll still be here at Christmas.

The heated blanket has come out, and Sophie hasn't moved since lunch time. She also has her head on the control unit so I can't change the temperature. Note: the instructions say "not to be used as a pet blanket", but Sophie is not noted for compliance with regulations.

Black and white cat curled up asleep on a blue blanket. A white control unit can just be seen under the cat's head

Amal told me this morning that's she's up to $750, and just needs another $100 in order to get Naser's meds and also just a buy a few basics for little Khaled, like nappies. If we could get that goal met today, it would be a terrific load off her mind. ❤️‍🩹🙏

Amal is desperately needing $600 for Naser’s lung treatment. He was hospitalized again last week. She also needs $300 for a bed for baby Khaled who is just weeks old. Rodents & bugs are a danger to small babies living in the tents of the refugee area DONATE: gofund.me/7deaed283 TY for your help!!

I'm probably the only person looking at this who is more concerned that they appear to have put back shoes on the front hooves. It's just weird! Australian company, though, they clearly have different ideas about what the well-dressed horse is wearing.

I found a company called Canterpants that sells trousers for horses. I wasn't looking for any such company or product but I found it anyway. Canterpants.

A horse wearing two pairs of trousers. Or maybe one pair of four-legged trousers.

CHICKEN FACT: Chickens were originally kept only as pets (and for the eggs). There is no evidence that anyone ate them before around 250 BC. There are also plenty of records of them being buried alongside humans, suggesting they were thought important companions, or even sacred.

A photograph I took of the hen who was collectively looked after and fed by me and my neighbours when I lived in a wood cabin on the edge of Dartmoor during spring 2018. Her name was Falcon, which caused some confusion when a stranger overheard one of my neighbours announce "I ate a Falcon egg this morning."

An interesting story, but I do wish the Guardian, and the expert consulted, hadn't used terms like 'invaded', 'bold attempt' and 'conquer' to describe the behaviour of a butterfly. Ridiculous. Queen of Spain butterfly invades Britain – but will it become native? www.theguardian.com/environment/...

This year thousands of the golden-coloured butterfly have arrived in Britain in what one expert calls ‘a bold attempt at colonisation’

Just got some Ref**m literature delivered with the post. No prepaid address on the back, so the wokest, greenest thing I can think to do with it is put it in the wormery with all the other rotten stuff. It'll be transformed into lovely worm casts to plant next year's vegetables in.

Fellow archaeologists out there can we have a conversation about the use of AI in the materials we produce for the public. I know that a lot of us are increasingly frustrated by the use of AI in media and all the awful stereotypes that we have spent decades trying to challenge creeping back in

Late post for Caturday - saw this nice little detail on a pub wall in Sheffield as I walked to the Professional Zooarch meeting a few weeks ago. It reminded me of the Cat Trail in York - maybe there are other Sheffield cats? #Caturday

Pub frontage. White walls, black woodwork. Traditional signwriting above the door reads "Dog & Partridge" in black and gold.

Sister's car was reversed into by a tractor, while she was inside. Insurance claim form question: "How do we know that the third party was a tractor?" Several replies have been drafted, none of them very polite.

The scale of this destruction is almost unimaginable. There really aren't the words to describe it. And this afternoon I have to complete a survey at work so my employer can gauge how staff are using AI effectively. Suspect I will be marked for 'education'. www.theguardian.com/environment/...
