I have been in schools and watched my tax dollars literally feed hungry kids in the form of free breakfast and lunches. And it’s honestly deeply satisfying to tell a kid to take as many bananas as he wants. That’s what my taxes should be doing.

I have, with my own eyes, watched my tax dollars in the form of missiles as they hit buildings inhabited by civilians. I'd much prefer subsidizing a grocery story I don't use.

Opinion: Mamdani's idea may sound appealing, but it's NYC taxpayers who will take the hit, subsidizing discounts they may never even use.

Stamp duty is a big barrier to moving home. I want to downsize, but ~$15k duty is a lot! im(unqualified)o, a yearly/on-going duty or tax would be better. With a low rate for principle place of residence, and increasing for subsequent houses and investment properties.

interesting thing that is rarely talked about with authors trying to use AI in debut novels: you will get caught once edits start or at MOST on book two. self publishing is different i suppose, but anyone out there trying to break into traditional publishing with AI clearly does not know the process

Let’s be clear here, when scientists say mistakes were made at the start of the pandemic, we DO NOT mean that we did too much. We mean not socially distancing quickly enough, not making tests widely available, and not acknowledging COVID is airborne and distributing N95 masks to everyone.

For a generation, everyone lived with the fairy tale that the state was powerless. Suddenly, that was shown to be a lie. It acted, which means it can act again. But it does not. Many people have become disillusioned bc they know better is possible. The cookers, meanwhile, went the other way.

My own theory: everyone watched governments move quickly to take care of people (social security increases, job guarantee, eviction moratoriums) after years of being told it was impossible. After, it was all immediately yanked away. Worse, politicians have gone back to pretending it's not possible
