I’ve volunteered at food pantries and you sometimes get people upset to see someone in a nice car using a food pantry and I need to completely assure you that the person with the nice car actually is in need of that food because people who aren’t in need do not pretend to need food

Anonymity is the keystone of freedom. If the founders of the U.S. could not post opinions critical of King George, III anonymously they would have been arrested and executed.

The Spokane fire conspiracy theories are almost identical to the Altadena fire conspiracy theories. These people have no understand of how fire works, how science works, or why some things burn. I'm writing a book chapter about it, but the people who need to read it don't read books.
The internet is filled with really dumb people who right now think the fires in Spokane WA were fake because the houses burned but trees didn’t. What they’re forgetting is that dead, thin, dry wood burns. Wet, dense, living wood is harder to burn. Old living pine and house vs fire: house loses.
I was recently on a jury for a gun possession case (though I ended up being an alternate). I hope this case goes the way mine did.
Ver interesting story. A convicted felon says he was trying to turn over an unwanted gun to the police when he was arrested. Police said he was acting drunk and shifty. He’s going on trial next week. chicago.suntimes.com/the-watchdog...
For millennia migration was just a standard thing for humans.
“Here’s a radical thought: what if migration is only a problem to those who want it to be? What if we started seeing the mass movement of people less as an existential threat and more as a simple inevitability of human existence?”
maybe having a mayor who believes in restorative justice rather than “1000 new cops and shotspotter” is better
There were 37 homicides in the city last month, the lowest total for any such month dating back to at least 1970. That total is down 18% compared to July 2025, and is less than half the totals of July 2020 and 2021, which each saw more than 100 killings.

Uh, the testosterone levels of boys and girls pre-puberty are like, identical if I’m not mistaken …
An initiative on the ballot in Washington state in November would require all athletes seeking to play girl's sports from kindergarten to high school to undergo "genetic screening, a testosterone-levels test, or an examination of their reproductive anatomy" before they can play
If you're traveling through O'Hare today, get there early. I have status, was walked through all the check-in lines, have Pre-check, and it still took over 30 minutes to get through TSA.
No rain in the two-week forecast for Spokane. It will be very lucky if things don’t get worse.
Drivers need to keep in mind that they have actually really poor visibility of other cars. You can see the ones immediately in front of and behind you, sometimes oncoming ones, sometimes in other lanes. But since bikes and cars travel at different rates frequently, we each see more of the other.
I could count on one hand the number of cars I’ve seen blow through a red light or stop sign in the last few years, but I can’t even count how many cyclists I’ve seen do it. Which is even more remarkable when you consider how many more cars there are than bikes on the road.
I think I've seen at least three mayoral candidates now say that we need to A) balance the budget, B) reduce property taxes, and C) hire more cops does math work differently where they are from than it does here

I had my car broken into and laptop stolen in front of a police station in San Francisco and when I walked in to report the crime the officer on duty asked what I wanted him to do about it
It’s so funny when people are like “sure you’re an abolitionist now but wait until you’re the victim of a property crime.” Buddy, the most useful thing the police have ever done for property crime is put the form you need to submit to your insurance online.

I have a bunch of family whose homes are at risk and who have had to evacuate due to the fires in Spokane. So far no confirmed homes lost. Thankfully it seems wind has substantially died down, at least for now.
I don’t care if I’m revealing my location. Last night, my house was destroyed from the Old Trails fire burning in Spokane, Washington. I have my family, my pets, but nothing else. I won’t have anyway to make money for a while, so I need donations. paypal.me/HFehlig

So I can’t speak for the universal experience, but I’ve had multiple potholes filled within days just from reporting to 311 through the CHI311 app … this is a great escalation option though!
in portland someone spray painted penises around potholes, and they got filled pretty immediately www.oregonlive.com/portland/202...
Wow, if it isn’t the consequences of our own actions!
This is a crisis of federalism. Tim Walz is asserting as fact that Iran attacked water infrastructure in Minnesota and several other states. And Trump is saying it's Minnesota's own fault they were attacked as part of a war he started.
“This isn’t a biking area,” he insisted, noting that he sees more people riding bikes and scooters on sidewalks than in the lanes.” This is an interesting point bc it’s presented as a case against bike lanes but I think this says that there’s actually a need to have more multi modal infrastructure.

I just remembered that last week while biking I had a guy who was holding a phone in his hand tell me his phone was hands free and call me a bitch and then drive off. I was so sad I didn’t catch him again before making it home.
