Hey remember when Nanowrimo said "sure why not" to allowing AI slop in their process and then immediately died after 20 years of operation oh, no reason, was just thinkin' about it

In which we have a little flashback to how things were, as Teddy and Dickie reunite at Oxford, and the rules are a little unclear… Chapter Sixteen continues: forthenby.com/2026/08/05/2...

i don't like to police genre, but it's not dark academia unless somebody gets squished in one of these bad boys
Eternally living with the disappointment that the next piercing I want to get probably isn’t physically possible.
Hey, Edinburgh folk - anyone know a good, friendly piercing studio in the city?
In honour of #InternationalOwlDay. (It may be a bit niche [or maybe not, seeing the popularity of #TheOdyssey], but it's my favourite of any memes I've made.)
I wonder if “genre hook” might be a term, but that suggest it’s front and centre in the book and its marketing - whereas I’ve read a bunch of stuff where the weird happens at a deeply buried point.
Is there a name for what I think of as “assistive sci-fi or fantasy” - i.e. where there’s a fantastical element but it’s just there as a device to explore the theme. I don’t mean “this scifi is also deep”, like LeGuin, I mean i.e. “the scifi element is a device to move the real plot along”
One of my favourite things about human sexuality is that - no matter what your body type - there are likely many people out there who thinks your baseline physique is the hottest thing that ever walked this earth.
men: women are shallow and all of them only want buff, cut dudes with six packs like 80% of the women i've met on the internet: i'd let Matt Berry smash me like a pinata
I would say, “Good luck to all Scottish kids getting their results today,” but let’s face it - there’s no one under 35 on BlueSky. So. Good luck to all the Scottish parents currently hyperventilating as they watch the clock.
GIRL SNAKE CATCHER. she makes a snug little income by securing reptiles for traveling shows SHE JUST GRABS THEM (The Washington Bee, Washington DC, November 8, 1902)
Doubt I’ll get much uptake, but go on. 1 like = 1 completely mundane fact about me.
1 like = 1 completely dull mundane fact about me
The thing about chronic pain is you get very blasé about it (pain is a companion, etc) even when it’s debilitating. But *then* a whole new kind of pain will spring up from something and just completely BODY you. (I am not enjoying whatever is going on with my shoulder this week.)
Emily Gravett is brilliant - witty and anarchic, and great fun to read. Also, huge love for Jon Klassen, and Quack Quack Moo, We See You! by Mij Kelly (a terrible title, but a joy of a book.)
Who are your favourite children's authors? I want more books to read to my son (getting on three years). There's so much terrible stuff out there, almost as if publishers believe it's ok for it to be bad because the kids won't know the difference. Anyway, anything you'd recommend?
My children will grow up to never bored enough at 11pm to watch Eurotrash, and that is a genuine loss. Instead they will watch worse things on their phone on purpose.
I miss when cable TV had absolutely no money and tons of airtime to fill so they'd be like fuck it what about a guy and a puppet make fun of movies? what if we just take all this old cartoon shit we have and make a talk show?

One of the reasons I love The Princess Bride (the film) is that it gets marital law right - most people believe you interrupt a wedding at the “just impediment” bit, but unless your impediment is legal, that’s just a stalling tactic.
Currently weight lifting/driving/kitchen dancing to this banger from Muse. It’s infectious and I can’t help but shift my feet and bump my shoulders… youtu.be/p--xk9n1eIM?...

My children are singing My Chemical Romance and getting the lyrics wrong. It’s not too late to abandon them, is it?
One thing to understand about a scone is that - on one level - they are just a jam-and-cream delivery system.
Incredible to remember that all of these supposed "radical gender ideology" asks were simply the status quo plus what *a Conservative government* was proposing and consulting on under a decade ago
What I want for trans + people in the UK. The puberty blocker ban lifted. The toilet ban scrapped. Supreme Court ruling overtuned/made ineffective. An informed consent model for gender affirming care. Self ID. Non-Binary people legaly recognised. No trans + censorship in schools.

Shopping for a stainless steel jam pan and looking at reviews, and have to admit - not really going to trust a site which recommends a casserole dish and a stock pot as top picks.
