Sean Evans: On the set of Eyes Wide Shut you played chess with Stanley Kubrik, and - Tom Cruise: (drinking Da Bomb straight from the bottle) he always played the Sicilian Defence.
MAMDANI: And I just think that there are barriers, barricades, to helping Americans that we can break down TRUMP: Uh huh MAMDANI: And breaking down barriers? Reminds me of a certain Broadway show *smiling widely* where they worked together to break a barricade? TRUMP: *sitting bolt upright* Phantom
Channeling Canadian YIMBYs by saying Canada's EU Associate Membership needs to come with elevator and single-stair reform. (They're correct, btw).
It's always worth stating we're a distinct society from the US. Bilingualism, parliamentary government, bunny hugs. Totally different. To be European we gotta get that vacation time up. How is 3+ weeks not a basic NDP talking point. Eby, Kinew you have majorities! (I think Sask has 3 weeks).
Poll showing that Canadians feel they share more with Europe than the United States. Strongest in Quebec and BC but *even Albertans* feel this way!
Eric Duhaime saying "the most important thing to fight climate change is to eliminate the carbon tax in Quebec" is amazing. It must absolutely rule to play politics on easy mode, saying the dumbest possible thing and still getting 15% because of culture wars.
In my experience in the civil service, entry level staff have Masters degrees, senior management have a bachelors, and middle management have PhD. All the training that got senior management to that position has been privatized.
the thing about this is that this isn't an AI problem. AI is *accelerating* the problem, but industry investment in training, mentoring and developing employees has been waning for decades, what's different is that it's going to hit white collar work in the way it's been hitting the trades for years
Here at the Toronto Star we follow the Atkinson Principles, except for Martin Regg Cohn and Rosie DiManno, who instead follow the Caca Poopoo principles.
I think every billionaire should be submitted to a Nathan Fielder documentary. I want to see the absolute worst vibes imaginable.
Since we're doing distracted driving today, I'll just add to the discourse that Mercedes drivers have been awful since well before screens. The more expensive the car, the less likely they are to yield to pedestrians. pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC...
Estimated car cost as a predictor of driver yielding behaviors for pedestrians
Pedestrian crashes are not equitably distributed; people of color and males are overburdened. The aim of this study was to examine if driver yielding behavior differed based on gender and skin color o...

Watch the kids vote for the Sugar Maple, upholding the Laurentian consensus.
Toronto is putting on a “Kids Vote Weekend” in October, where kids will go to polling locations and vote for one of five candidates running to be Tree of the Year. I will be cancelling all my coverage of the mayoral race and focusing exclusively on this contest. www.toronto.ca/city-governm...
Can someone tell me why a decommodified land trust house costs $1 million plus a $90,000 land lease? I'm told deccomodification is the key to affordability. Where does the money go? Is it younger residents subsidizing older residents? www.thestar.com/life/togethe...

"Lake America" instantly just absolutely clogged with algae. Six uniformed National Guard guys standing on a beach dumping windex into it. It smells like a turtle tank.
If Vancouver is big Hong Kong, would it be accurate to say "they're building Shanghai on Yonge Street"? Asking for a friend.
White House official Peter Navarro agrees with Steve Bannon that Canada is now a "wholly owned subsidiary of the Chinese Communist Party" "Vancouver is now big Hong Kong," Navarro says
To add to this very good thread, Mamdani is such an above replacement level politician that he should probably travel in a pope-mobile.
"should cyclists wear helmets" discourse is such a good one because the arguments for both positions are totally common-sense and unassailable, everyone just digs in.
I'm staring a non-profit that sends longtime politicians paddle boarding, hiking, fishing. Poor underprivileged councillors like Mike Colle and James Pasternak should be allowed to canoe the Humber.
Honestly this rocks lol, who amongst us hasn’t spent some quality time in nature and thought about how maybe we don’t want to return to our jobs after all
Ready for Richard III? The King's Men have released a list of 4 quartos and 3 folios to read before this winter of discontent.
Ready for your Avengers Doomsday homework? Marvel has released a watchlist of 15 movies and TV shows you should watch before December 18 rolls around. https://bit.ly/3UmhwmS
With Mike Layton entering the race in Uni-Rose, I'm once again on my bullshit about municipal political parties. Engaged voters should get a progressive primary, and median voters should be told which way to vote by the colour of the sign. Relying on name recognition is a terrible system!
Regarding the bike lane appeal in Ontario, it should serve as a reminder to Canadian progressives that the court is not really an avenue of progress in this country. And it's not municipalities or school boards. You gotta win provincial governments.
Ontario Liberal MPP Stephen Blais posted an AI-generated image of himself greeting adoring supporters at an OLP meet and greet at one can only assume to be the Place d’Orléans shopping mall Blais seems to think the AI imagery is justifiable on account of a dearth of volunteers
yeah man "woke 1" sucked ass. I "woke 1" morning from uneasy dreams to find myself transformed into a giant insect
1) I think this is bad. 2) $150k USD for an oppo researcher against YOUR OWN PARTY...I think the ONDP paid like $48k CAD for an actual oppo researcher in 2018. Not to lib out, but you gotta get some of this money out of politics.
The "centrist" think tank Third Way is looking to pay someone between $140,000 and $150,000 to spend their days trying to dig up dirt on DSA members. They're trying to sell this gig as "anti-extremism" work, which I find completely disgusting.
"You can build a subway in Toronto for less than the GDP of Lebanon" is apparently an impossible statement for Ontario Politicians.
we literally stand on the shoulders of giants. towering figures who have exited the world. fierce intellects who believed things like "you can ban or regulate dangerous stuff" and "societies can rein in excesses," and "peace is generally preferable to war and chaos." may as well have been aliens
As is frequently the case, landlords and speculators tell on themselves! They hate when cities allow building, because they know all the power they have comes from scarcity. A city that builds is a city for tenants, not for landlords.
Congratulations to CMHC, Edmonton City Council and all of the YIMBYs who "ruined" real estate investing in Edmonton. If we don't want housing to be primarily treated as an investment, we need to end the shortage. www.instagram.com/reel/DbmApzb...
The Neptis Foundation released their Missing Middle Study (from @conradspeckert.bsky.social and Jack Keays) this summer. They made 9 recommended building code changes. When you add them all up it makes a pretty impressive difference to the cost of 3 and 4 storey plexes and apartment buildings.
I normally love @graphicmatt.com's writing, but in the spirit of Emily Wilson posting like mad, I want to offer some friendly criticism. Term limits, to paraphrase the outgoing councillor, are trash. www.thestar.com/opinion/cont...
Matt Elliott: Gord Perks left Toronto council with a bang. Why won’t his long-serving colleagues ever leave?
With Toronto councillors serving for decades and Doug Ford blocking key reforms, term limits may be the only way to get new voices at city hall.
