I think the scholar had interesting observations about the popular entertainment but that critiquing popular entertainment from a scholarly perspective is bound to result in harsh assessments because the criteria and language for one perspective doesn't map well to the other

Here on E Street, we are heartbroken over the death of Glen Hansard. We met in Ireland many years ago and he was always nothing but a great musician, a good friend and a generous and gracious man. Always positive, smiling and ready to sing. God bless him and his loved ones. Bruce

I dunno yall. I have so much respect for that woman, but to complain about how another artist chose to interpret one of the world’s oldest stories. Isn’t that her whole thing? Translating the epic for new audiences? (And yes, I understand that the much of the pushback to her review is sexist).

NEW: I wrote for MSNBC about how Madison Square Garden turning off their facial recognition cameras for Taylor Swift is a perfect encapsulation of our dystopian present: where the wealthy can use surveillance to consolidate power, and the rest of us live in a privately owned panopticon.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce got to buy MSG's privacy. Her fans aren't so lucky.

Reports that Madison Square Garden temporarily shut off its facial recognition system for Swift’s wedding expose a glaring problem with how the elite wield and control mass surveillance.

Why Aren’t There More Imax 70mm Screens for ‘The Odyssey’? ‘It’s Not Practical,’ Company Says

'The Odyssey' has spiked interest in IMAX70mm showings, but the company explains why building more is 'not practical.'

I know it seems like the fight against AI is really uphill but I want to remind you at one point, people went really hard for NFTs, including $69.3 million for one by Beeple at a Christie's auction in 2021, but now almost no one buys them.

Anyway, happy Monday! The Dean is shutting down my department - Religion & Culture, the only 1 of is kind in the country & home to the innovative Major in Humanities for Public Service. There is no immediate budgetary or political pressure for this decision

one of the most depressing things of the last decade or so is realizing how many friends/ colleagues/ leaders are (a) actually sympathetic to bad faith fascistic attacks (on public goods, education, vulnerable peoples, etc.), or (b) just simply not up to the moment we find ourselves in
