We use the randomized lottery to break down the overall effect on US employment into part based on substitution (firms swapping natives & immigrants in the same role) versus scale (firms scaling up or down overall operations) The scale effect dominates—>

The family of a 37-year-old woman who died while pregnant filed a lawsuit against Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and others, alleging state law prevented her from getting a potentially life-saving abortion.

Family of Texas woman who died after being denied an abortion sues Paxton, medical providers

“The basic principle here is you cannot take away someone’s life, as a state, and not be held liable for doing so,” a lawyer for the family said.

The world’s scientists breathed a sigh of relief this week as temperatures in the UK dropped below 35 degrees, meaning that everything is fine and we can go back to burning fossil fuels forever without any worries. From the Private Eye archive. Issue 1682, August 2026.

They've spent 4 years chanting "The Future is arriving so fast/We are not prepared/We need more time." But their theory of governance (to the extent they have one at all) is "we build The Future. Society adapts." There is no "making wise use of the time," bc that's not how governance works.

I wrote this quickly at a bus stop and didn't realize it would go viral, or else I would have worded it better. But the point is that the media is too credulous about AI killing everyone in 10 years (how?) when climate change is killing people now and will only get worse (we know exactly how).

I resigned from ExxonMobil today. I spent the last three years doing fossil fuel extraction research at both BP and ExxonMobil. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing to maximize extraction while the window to act closes, and gambling with our lives. More below.

At our T&F journal we now sometimes get obviously AI-generated papers that we reject only to see submitted again after being "humanized" (whether humanly-humanized or bot-humanized, who knows) 😬 It's like being at war with our own publisher over what constitutes academic writing, bot or not 🤖

Everyone knows AI-written academic papers are embarrassing now, including their "authors", which is why even the publishers - who stand to benefit most from AI-amplified publication volumes - are now offering "Affordable human expert editing for AI-drafted or AI-edited manuscripts" 🤯

I will go back to drive thru before I hire a bot to edit the bot slop so it sounds like what bot thinks a human sounds.

Very forceful statement by Terry Tao about AI and math. terrytao.wordpress.com/2026/09/11/a... Note, he is not claiming the models aren't real and powerful. He's talking about how that power should be used. This, I believe, is what all AI discussions should center.

One more totally fucking nuts graph for today, care of a request by @leonsimons.com. Not only is the current standard deviation for the Nino 3.4 sea-surface temperature above 4SD over the 1982-2011 mean for the first time on record, but no previous year even reached 3SD.

A punishing combination of record debt and high borrowing costs has pushed the world's annual interest bill to more than $2tn, eating up tax revenues, destabilising governments — and creating a "doom loop" that some fear may be hard to break. Today's Big Read is on #FTEdit 👉 ft.trib.al/vJh1NFE
