parents with school age children are not and should not be the only ones who materially support public schools. property taxes of many people without children are appropriately directed to public schools. each of us should be pouring into these schools in our own ways (giving of our time etc...)
Watching the response to the NHJ article, I’m struck by how, when an unequal system becomes a problem for each family to manage, we focus on how they navigated it, scoring the private choice instead of demanding that the public system remedy the inequality.
I’ve seen the criticism of NHJ, but had she sent her child to a largely white school right off the bat, she’d have been called a hypocrite who didn’t live her public values. There was no winning here, and that sucks. We have to do better for everyone’s children, no matter where they live.
Read what @nhannahjones.bsky.social wrote. Putting her choices on trial is a waste of everyone's time. Instead, this essay should have us all talking about why racism still so powerfully shapes the education our children receive—and what we’re going to do about it.

A decade ago, I made a decision about my daughter’s education that I hoped would challenge New York City’s separate and unequal school system. Now 16, she thinks I made the wrong choice.

But the truth is that society is a construction project and it is not self-executing. Having a shared project to work on collectively is essential. We are living through a time where a number of people aren't bought into the shared project. So here we are.

The ads I see most often across platforms right now involve 30 wealthy monopolists arguing that baseball players should be paid less because the league they run and should promote isn’t fair to owners who pocket their revenue rather than invest. I’d sure love to support a players league someday.
here is what i think: we're not consumers or spectators, we are participants with agency. you should not hope that democrats will do anything. you must work to force them to do the right thing. the odds are long, but we are far from the first americans to face long odds. we will win.
you know, when someone says something like "these are the things that need to be done to avert disaster" and your response is "you think democrats will do that?!?" all you're telling me is that you think politics is a spectator sport

In one move, the Suns unraveled the goodwill they built back up last year, contradicted their talk about "high character," and alienated a segment of the fanbase. For @sunsafterdark.bsky.social, I wrote about the non-basketball side of trading for Miles Bridges:

The Phoenix Suns have wanted Miles Bridges for years. In a trade agreement reported Sunday by ESPN's Chams Sharania, they finally got him. A

Adding: this is one reason conservatives work so hard to stigmatize "virtue signaling." Virtue signaling is actually incredibly important! It lets other people know that they are not alone in their values. It works against pluralistic ignorance. That's why they want you to feel abashed & stay quiet.
I’ve been a Phoenix Suns fan for 40+ years, but I’m very not interested in supporting a team with Miles Bridges on it. Even when he’s gone from the team it’s hard to imagine wanting to cheer for a team owned & operated by folks who traded for Miles Bridges.
I wrote about what it would mean for the Suns to trade for Miles Bridges 2 and a half years ago when these rumors first started popping up. My feelings haven’t really changed on the matter:

NEW — I wrote about my visit to Delaney Hall, the ICE facility in Newark, NJ where detainees are on a hunger and labor strike in protest of rotten food, unpaid work, and unjust detainment, and where protesters outside have spent the last week drawing ICE's ire while keeping strikers' demands alive.

The reports coming out of Delaney Hall right now are sickening. No one should be subjected to the inhumane treatment and conditions we are hearing and seeing from inside that facility. ICE has become a rogue agency that must be reined in.
At Delaney Hall, an ICE facility 8 miles from my front door, my neighbors are reportedly being beaten & gassed, and are on strike. ICE won't allow the NJ Department of Health to inspect, and have denied access to elected officials including the Governor, Mayor, a Senator and US reps.
Just insane. New Jersey Gov Mikie Sherrill says DHS just denied state health inspectors full access to Delaney Hall. She's calling for it to be shut down.
