I was researching which translation of The Iliad to read & it’s interesting that Caroline Alexander has been left out of the dominant conversations with the ‘first woman to translate Homer in English’ label incorrectly assigned to Emily Wilson. Really evident how much of this is just marketing speak

Just a really bizarre flattening of these characters and performances, it’s not only inaccurate but feels like a strange projection

weird and kinda racist undertones to Wilson's comments about the black characters in Nolan's The Odyssey imo I don't think any of the performances measure up to "black best friend", that is a projection

Have seen two common diverging takes in the wake of Nolan’s The Odyssey re: Ancient Greeks and how there should be takes on these old epics exploring how distantly archaic and culturally alienating to modern sensibilities these peoples and ages were, and then on the opposing spectrum how humanity
Sure (lover of the movie here btw) but I also think if you ask a classicist what she thinks of it you're gonna get a critique on classicist grounds

There are absolutely problems with the film, but it's an entertainment designed to warn audiences that complex civilization is coming unglued. It succeeds.
I do wish there was more variation with the way Circe’s island looked compared to Polyphemus/Cyclops’ (Nolan was both more fantastical than I thought he would be and left me wishing he would lean into the mythology more) but the trailers are also a bit misrepresentative of how the film looks. There
