This is fun!!! We added an extra-early show in Cambridge for early-to-bed comedy fans!
Massachusetts people! My 7:15pm show at The Comedy Studio on 9/19 sold out and the 9:30 is selling well, so we added a 4:30pm matinee(ish) show as well! Come enjoy some laughs in daylight! (We couldn't add a Sunday night show because it's Yom Kippur!) Tickets: www.thecomedystudio.com/events/tcs-p...
in the current political climate i actually don't think it would be good if Himesh Patel played the guy whose deception and rule breaking doomed civilization
In this piece, I regret the paragraph about the uses of the POC actors - who are all great, but IMO under-utilized (and why couldn‘t Himesh Patel be Odysseus instead?) I still think the film largely wastes its strong cast, but I framed it badly.
Now this is fair to criticize - an Odyssey movie with Patel as Odysseus would be great but obviously not THIS Odyssey where it would be pretty bad to frame a brown guy as a symbol of the failings of American imperial policy.

Columbo: My wife, she loves Wilco. Only listens to the early songs, though. Back when Jay Farrar was in the band, you understand. Me, failing to act nonchalant: The post-YHF albums are also quite good, lieutenant.
If I had to describe the heart and soul of Bluesky it would the following: a guy who didn’t actually read Emily Wilson’s review of Nolan’s Odyssey movie defending it against a guy who didn’t actually watch Nolan’s Odyssey movie
regardless of how you feel about christopher nolan i do not think it's true that she is "100% right" to claim a bunch of different individual actors who play various roles and are *not all Black* fall into the Black best friend trope. entire thing smacks of racial injustice dilettantism.
she's 100% right. Nolan is a notorious British Liberal, aka a Tory, a Conservative, and these are issues that have existed in most of his movies.
Parody of The Odyssey where Odysseus gets so used to it that he only feels comfortable in sleeping in a giant horse
My piece on sincerity and camp, as well as how an artist can elevate reference and pastiche into something truly original, has arrived on MUBI's Notebook! I love John Early's Maddie's Secret so much and it was a delight to write about it and the beautiful lineage of comedy and drag it's a part of.
Committing to the Bit
A loving homage to TV movies, John Early’s "Maddie’s Secret" goes beyond parody by embracing a rich history of sincere camp.

I wrote a comedy textbook about Native American history, people and culture! It's called “We’ve Been Here The Whole Time! A Not So Sacred Guide to All Things Native America.” It’s like if The Daily Show or The Onion wrote a book about Indian Country.
real art isn't in the cinema. it's not in books or libraries. it's definitely not in the TV. real art only exists on youtube channels with 3,000 followers where a guy who calls himself MicrowaveBen reviews tv dinners on a strange but internally consistent 7-point scale he calls the Flavornator
Her bit about Travis Scott feels especially reductive and tone deaf given the reasoning behind the casting
Ok one thing I will say is that when I watched that scene what immediately struck was the SOUND of women screaming. You don’t see what is happening to them but it is the loudest sound you hear, the whole time.
I do want to pick apart this observation in Emily Wilson's review: "we are not shown that war and killing are bad." This is an odd point to me, given that I found the entire war as presented to be a squalid, poisoned event that has brought everyone involved with it harm despite its glorification
weird and kinda racist undertones to Wilson's comments about the black characters in Nolan's The Odyssey imo I don't think any of the performances measure up to "black best friend", that is a projection
Oh I see, she mentioned Leguizamo once in this paragraph, but I was distracted by this insane thing she said about Eurylochus, a guy who literally leads a mutiny against Odysseus
It’s like crazy seeing people gas up the Emily Wilson review, it’s very racist lol
I’m actually still hung up on Emily Wilson calling Himesh Patel’s Eurylochus ”the black best friend”
Teens are doing the eating raw vegetables challenge….very dangerous, knock that carrot outta their hand if you see it
it wouldve been funny if goldfinger wasnt a movie and just a crazy song about a guy shirley bassey made up
They don't want you to touch it because it will give you powers

this is your mission. our pedophile president needs you to show up in full combat gear on a hot summer day to the pool he filled with algae because he gave a paint job to one of his cigar puffing cronies. you are ordered to stop tourists from touching the green water. good luck soldier

Read a random blog post like 10 years ago or so that was making the argument that airports can be thought of like developer previews for society at large and using that metaphor to describe surveillance and authoritarian creep and yeah + welp + dang!
Gotta say, not a fan of the TSA-ification of America. This surveillance creep, not so good to me
they’re adding TSA to CityWalk it’s so fucking over bro
I have a competition in me. I want no one else to have presents. I hate most Whos.
