If you are going to comment on the proposed changes to how science is done in the US, please use this guide. The rules specify that you have to mention the number associated with the proposed changes, and this blog has those. Here is where to comment: www.federalregister.gov/documents/20...

PFAS is everywhere - including the drinking water supplies for remote British islands... thanks to sea spray. Underlining how it's all through the ocean in the process. www.theguardian.com/environment/...
It has the highest levels of toxic Pfas in drinking water in Scotland. But how did this remote island become awash with forever chemicals?
Scientists believe they may now have found the cause of Fair Isle’s pollution – and warn that it should be ringing alarm bells in other coastal areas

@drandrewthaler.bsky.social my family is having a vigorous dinner time debate over this sticker's taxonomy? One Patreon post IDed it as a snail fish, but another IDed as a cusk eel. We've looked at images of each, but we are not marine biologists. Help us settle the debate with a definitive ID!
The National Science Board was created in 1950 with staggered 6 terms so that scientific research priorities would outlast any single administration. The statute says members must be chosen "solely on the basis of established records of distinguished service." www.forbes.com/sites/johndr...
Trump Fired The Entire National Science Board. Here's Why That Matters
Trump fired all 24 members of the National Science Board, the body that oversees NSF. The institutional design that built American science is at stake.

Another own goal by the Administration. Rolling back the GHG endangerment means the federal government isn't regulating them, so their argument against Climate Superfund laws is invalid. Plus, the laws are about past emissions not future ones. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026...

Why is Devils Lake, ND always flooding? Last night I went down a rabbit hole. 🧵 below:
Devils Lake (ND) flooding occurs because there are no natural outlets to the lake until it reaches an elevation of 1458 ft. Back in 1993, it was ~1422 ft. At that elevation it covers ~69 sq. miles. Today, the lake surface is at 1449 ft, and it covers 213 sq. miles. ND is flat.
Tonight, I was looking at water.noaa.gov to see where the US is flooding. My 11-year old pointed to the ongoing major flooding in North Dakota, and I said "Oh, that's Devils Lake. It's always flooding there." They asked "Why?" and a rabbit hole yawned before me.

In person meeting over and an hour until I have to be on zoom. Nicest weather we've had since I arrived in DC, and I found a swing by the river. A few days of vacation starts very soon!
Enjoying my Minnesota @startribune.com subscription as a way to follow what's happening in my natal state, but also for articles like this: www.startribune.com/blue-snow-mi...
You’ll never guess what’s making those weird blue spots in the snow
It’s a surprising downstream effect from one of Minnesota’s biggest invasive plant problems.

I spent four weeks camping on the High Arctic tundra in grad school. I'm going to be able to make some nice charitable donations.
I don’t think I could make it past 5 days (Please don’t say no dumb ass shit about baby wipes or any other loopholes)
There is a lot of uncertainty with this storm. That's what this map shows. What this map doesn't show is what snowfall has the highest probability of occurring. For the sake of my trip tomorrow, I'm hoping for the lower end of the range in DC.
truly, the most helpful map
A new report, DepaveLA, finds that 44% of Los Angeles County’s 312k acres of pavement may not be essential for roads, sidewalks and parking, and could be converted to greener cooler cover and habitat. www.latimes.com/environment/... acceleratela.org/depavela/
Nearly half of L.A. County’s pavement may be unnecessary, new map finds
Researchers have released the first parcel-level analysis to map all paved surfaces across L.A. County. In particular, large parking lots are ripe for change, they say.

No joke: I got angry hate mail today for writing an obituary of a Black woman scientist—because the person felt she did didn’t deserve the recognition. Which just makes me want to share it again: www.nature.com/articles/d41...

She made key contributions to US cold-war science despite facing huge barriers as a Black woman.

Devastated to learn that a recent UVM RSENR graduate was the NOAA Fisheries Observer on this vessel. All these lives lost are a tragedy, but I will especially mourn the loss of this member of the RSENR community whose adult life and professional career was just beginning.
UPDATE | The Coast Guard suspended its search for those aboard the Lily Jean. Authorities had launched a search and rescue mission after receiving an alert from the 72-foot vessel about 25 miles off the historic Cape Ann peninsula. They have since launched an investigation.
"the EPA announced it would no longer calculate the economic benefits of lives saved when setting limits [on pollution]...From now on, the agency will only tally the costs to industry. The benefits to human beings? Too uncertain to count, according to the EPA."
“This isn’t just a policy change. It’s a betrayal of more than a century of hard-won victories by public health heroes who fought, often at great personal and professional sacrifice, to establish a principle that should be beyond debate: American lives have value.”
A fun case study since there have been 72 million articles on the cold in the east and 4 on the warmth in the west

As always, my strong advice is not to watch a person be violently murdered. You will learn nothing by watching a video that you could not understand by reading a description. And it will scar your heart. It will not make you tougher or a better activist.
