This thread is super interesting on how LLMs work by using familiar structures/patterns/genre conventions to produce something that appears meaningful (b/c it resembles other, actually meaningful text) but in fact is totally empty.

Miriam Posner@miriamposner.com · 3mo agoOne point I wish I’d mentioned: one of my students said what struck them was how *relieved* many of their classmates were that Canvas was down. A day or two to breathe.
Asking LLMs political questions in languages other than English generates markedly different responses, reflecting pro-government biases in training data dominated by state-controlled media. This is super interesting and important work!

What I wish for everybody to remember when Canvas comes back online: The reason OUR data can be held for ransom is because Instructure, their owners (KKR private equity & Dragoneer venture capital), & our own employers (see ASU Atomic) monetize it. It's Canvas that hacked education & stole our IP.
