Your name is Oli, and you're a trans masc messenger who is trying to get an urgent message to the other side of this dangerous magical family's fancy gardens, through which you're trespassing. And there's monsters with their dicks out! johannestevans.co.uk/2026/10/20/t...
In Ugly: A Letter to My Daughter, I write about the difficult experience of growing up aesthetically misaligned with my “prom queen” mom and how my queerness exacerbated my sense of ugliness.
Because my job can be a real bummer, when I am searching for instances of sexual violence among men in a defined group, you don't search for "sexual assault," you search for "hazing." We have euphemized language because we really, really don't want to address this in any real terms.
increasingly I have come to believe that men sexually assault and harass *other men* far more than is clearly understood, and I suspect that grappling with that will be crucial to bringing about real change.
A couple weeks ago I signed up to get one on one help with applying for a creative grant (very grateful to Bombyx in western MA for hosting these) and forgot about it until it popped up on my calendar for this week. Nervous.
This is a masterclass in what to expect from a short story magazine. Don't compromise on this.
In light of some magazines pulling scummy things on creators lately, I’m doing a little thread on short story rights. I don't want anybody getting taken advantage of. Also, if you're new, this stuff can be confusing!
Listen, this is only 99p until after Fantasycon. And you'll be busy then, right?

"stop fetishizing catholicism" catholicism actually works best as a form of bdsm
I wrote a little essay on substack about how actually, quite a lot of people outside the academy are interested in books and other real things. The main reason to read this piece is that I discuss Frances, she of the bread-and-jam. emily613.substack.com/p/let-us-eat...

I love my students and my colleagues, and I love the discussions that are possible in the classroom and among scholars, in academic contexts.

A couple went on a Fox News podcast and claimed the state of #Massachusetts took away their teen because they won't help the teen transition. But it's actually because the father was charged with beating and threatening to kill the teen and the mother was charged with witness intimidation.

there was a time in this country when white liberals insisted black people could achieve parity if they would only slow down and stop rushing societal progress.
One of the more insidious phrasings I've seen with the Dems/trans rights discourse lately is the idea that trans people are being greedy and demanding a "maximalist" approach to trans rights. No, you cannot call the state of rights American trans people had as recently as 2023 "maximalist," sorry.
I deeply regret to inform you that this is probably necessary reading at this point

There are only two stories that won a Hugo whose screen adaptation also won a Hugo. “All Systems Red” is the second one. The other is “Dune” Congratulations @marthawells.com.
Live in North America and sad you missed out on the recent solar eclipse? Well we've got a partial lunar this coming week (Thursday night/Friday morning, peak at midnight ET). Moon gets red, no need for glasses, event lasts for hours so it's easy to glance outside www.space.com/stargazing/l...

Imagine being talented and beautiful and rich and famous and still the most noteworthy thing about you is how good a person you are.
I should note that this (3000-word) piece is slightly less “general public” than most of my writing, since I wrote it for a newsletter intended for researchers. But if you’re interested in dark energy, there’s way more about it in my first book, “The End of Everything (Astrophysically Speaking)”!
So... what's up with #DarkEnergy? 🤔 I wrote up a summary of the current status of possibly-weirdly-changing dark energy for @perimeterinstitute.bsky.social's shiny new researcher-focused newsletter; you can read the piece here:
The primary job of science fiction is to discuss the present via the illusion that it is the future
As an author of sci Fi isn't the most glaring non prediction social media? Jet packs and robots and ray guns but nothing on oligarchs turning is against each other on socials.
It's great that some people are genuinely not obsessed with anything but i cannot imagine personally being attracted to such a person. I could not desire someone so cultivatedly balanced as to contain no extremes. sorry but you can't get crazy hot pussy if you exclude the crazy from the equation
