My attention returns to Abraham, whose voice snaps like a twig at midnight on a most forbidden evening venture. His items are all packed, trunks stacked in the carriage which waits for him in the courtyard. It was my father’s final gift to us as a couple before his passing. He wanted us to have a means of connecting with the world beyond Zrób and the Manor which squats atop a hill with its back to the Białowieża forest. Hardly a fortress, but still with far too many unoccupied rooms.

“Yes, dearest?”

“What’s on your mind?”

What hasn’t been on my mind? Tax collection, land disputes, other conflicts—I’ve picked up some of the work that my husband cannot fit into the daylight hours, but not the full spread of his duties and responsibilities. He will be gone and stewardship of Zrób will fall to me. All the responsibility and none of the glory or compensation. And it tires me.
