I’m on a small-ship Alaska cruise with my son; our boat rescued a stranded vessel last night and apparently we did that after the Coast Guard radioed Mark Zuckerberg’s yacht - which was closer - and they repeatedly refused to respond. (There was near unanimous booing when the captain announced this)

This whole thread👇. Having represented workers in non-profits and early childhood education, unionization is necessary but not sufficient to fix these problems. One advantage of organizing is “having a collective voice in the statehouse” where “getting more from the boss” requires the state.

It's possible that leaning on loan forgiveness and empathy to keep people in public service doesn't work when wages stagnate and the jobs get more and more miserable due to understaffing.

the only reason i could afford to be a preschool teacher was bc bb made enough to subsidize it and i worked so. fucking. hard. mentally emotionally physically exhausting work in every possible way

This is a major failure point for public service loan forgiveness btw. It feels like a good idea until you have a kid; suddenly you’re working that public service job for essentially what you’re paying in childcare, so you quit the program halfway thru. (IMO dems should make PSLF a lot less onerous)

And the right is cheering over this. They want to shackle women to the home as much as possible. Removing female autonomy is arguably the glue holding their belief systems together.
