So, so many times this week have I almost posted this. Scott did it for me. Copyright is the root legal scourge that did this. In particular, the US copyright ruling that it's legal to scan a book, IF you destroy it. Yes, AI companies are evil. But copyright rulings mandated the destruction.
Copyright laws, digital distribution deals, & publishing monopolies are the reason destructive book scanning is putting books at risk. I get why folks are angry at AI companies buying books to destroy them. However, these issues predate them and hang a lot on books being subject to "market forces."
Today, Filippo de Vivo, Martin Conway, @faridahzaman.bsky.social and I, along with 30 other members of the Faculty of History at the University of Oxford have written to the leadership of the University of Exeter to express our deep concern about the proposed cuts to Humanities and Social Sciences
In 1656, Johann G. Nissel (d. 1662) published an Ethiopic and Arabic version of Song of Songs with a Latin translation (plus several other texts). The scan on Google Books (from a copy held by the Bavarian State Library) contains handwritten notes on some parallel passages in the Syriac Peshitta.

This is a great student-authored short piece about, in my read, how the allure of innovation/problem solving/bragging rights has led a lot of smart people to ignore the work of archivists and historians when developing historical, archive driven tools.

Great piece on vibe-coding that documents generalized phenomena: the deluge of LLM-slop threatening to overwhelm systems based on community, norms, and reciprocity (open-source software, but also peer review) and deskilling (particularly of beginners, which may destroy the talent pipeline).
Who cleans up after the vibe-coding party?
Our obsession with AI code-writing tools is overwhelming the web’s unsung human caretakers
