One of the cruelest parts of our criminal legal system is the way it casually steals time from people. Even if wrongful conviction compensation were easily accessible and closer to adequate, it cannot give someone back the years we’ve stolen.

The only way the logic of this holds together even a little bit is if you think trans people are not a protected category. If any other minority group was told to "enjoy the camps" it would be moderated as targeted hate speech. This is shameful.
New Democratic politician gets attention and rises in the polls due to moral clarity and refusal to abandon their principles or people, then throws that all away in a vain pivot to chasing Republican voters. Then they lose in the general election. A tale as old as fucking time.

It is both true that a letter on an ID document can never define you and that having ID that matches gender presentation is safety and privacy for (some) trans folks. Kansas cannot invalidate anyone's identity, but they are trying to take away their safety and privacy.

This comes on the heels of the story of how burdened government lawyers are responding to all the lawsuits and habeas petitions. They made sure they had time to work on this because vindictive cruelty aimed at a 5 year old is a priority.

Philando Castile did that and still ended up being killed. That is the reality behind these lies - when the state’s violence workers have impunity, there is no possible way to behave that will ensure you survive the encounter.
