#Preregistration supports #OpenScience, but is uncommon in animal research. This Meta-Research study by @hannowuerbel.bsky.social reveals that despite known benefits, perceived bureaucracy, time costs and inflexibility hinder adoption. 🧪#AcademicSky @unibe.ch @swissrn.bsky.social plos.io/4pL0tXq

😮 Finding 3 (surprising!): We found no overall evidence that green nest material lowers parasites or pathogens in the nest, challenging the assumption that it’s because of the "volatiles" assumption. 🔗 doi.org/10.1098/rspb...

Why do birds use green nest material? A systematic review and meta-analysis of experiments
Abstract. Many animals build nests. As external structures that can influence survival and reproduction, nests are often considered extended phenotypes. Bi

Nice! Self-contained reproducible #Rstats scripts or #Quarto documents Specify versions (or date) for R and R packages directly in the script or document
I'm happy to share `ir`, a new command-line tool for running portable R scripts and Quarto documents. It's inspired by my two favorite parts of `uv`: self-describing scripts and tools you can run without installing first. opensource.posit.co/blog/2026-07...

Are our ecological conclusions built on shaky foundations? Our latest paper in @methodsinecoevol.bsky.social highlights that Risk of Bias (RoB) assessment, crucial for ensuring the internal validity of research, is almost never used in #systematicreviews in eco & evo 📉 🔗 doi.org/10.1111/2041...
In other disciplines such as medicine, RoB assessment is the standard norm & is extensively used, highlighting a significant gap in ecology & evolution #synthesis To bridge this, we provide a clear roadmap to make RoB Known, Easy, and Possible for the entire community 🏗️ 🔗 doi.org/10.1111/2041...
I always guide my students to do a quantitative bias assessment in their lit review, because it's the best way to highlight evidence gaps. This should be a standard for all systematic or quantitative literature reviews, not just formal meta-analyses.

This looks useful. A typical meta-analysis in ecology mixes experiments with observational studies, mixes coefficients with different controls and therefore different causal meanings. I would not normally say "hey the folks in medicine are doing it right, imitate them" but in this case maybe
